About the position

Mead & Hunt, a nationally recognized professional services consulting firm, is seeking a full-time professional to join our Transportation and Community Planning team. This position is available in our offices located in Madison, WI; De Pere, WI; or Wauwatosa, WI. The primary focus of this role is to ensure that transportation projects comply with all regulations and procedural requirements set forth by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), as well as related environmental legislation and the policies and procedures of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The successful candidate will participate in a variety of transportation planning projects, which may include corridor studies, land use and urban design plans, and initiatives aimed at enhancing bicycle and pedestrian mobility. Responsibilities will also encompass public involvement efforts, grant writing, research, data collection and analysis, and the preparation of technical documents. The role may require some travel to various project sites and meetings. Key duties include the completion of NEPA processes and documentation for transportation projects, including those related to bicycle, pedestrian, and trail enhancements, as well as sustainable transport and climate change initiatives. The candidate will document the impacts of proposed actions, assess potential effects, conduct alternatives analysis, and propose mitigation strategies. Coordination of required state and federal environmental documents will be a significant part of the role, necessitating daily interactions with designers, consultants, and regulatory agencies at both the state and federal levels. Additionally, the candidate will conduct field and desktop environmental reviews and analyses for design projects, participate in public involvement programs, attend public hearings and agency meetings, and prepare and present technical findings and project information. The role also involves completing federal, state, and local permit applications related to wetlands, floodplains, public waters, and threatened or endangered species.

Responsibilities
• Completion of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process and documentation for transportation projects.

• Document impacts of proposed actions, assessment of potential effects, alternatives analysis, and proposed mitigation strategies.

Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in urban and regional planning, landscape architecture, ecology, botany, natural resources, or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university.

• At least 2 years of relevant experience.

• A valid driver's license.

Nice-to-haves
• Knowledge of or previous project experience in NEPA documentation with State DOTs.

• Previous project or work experience in environmental or transportation planning.

• Experience completing federal, state, and local permits for wetlands, floodplains, public waters, or other environmental resources.

• Experience coordinating with local, state, or federal government and related agencies.
