Job Description

The London Borough of Brent is seeking an Environmental Officer Trainee for a fixed-term apprenticeship (48 months) starting September 2025. The role involves promoting a safe environment, supporting housing regulations, and gaining practical skills in environmental health. The position requires GCSEs in Maths and English, and at least one A level in a science or technology subject. The job is based in Greater London, with some work at various locations.

Salary range: £25,998.45 (pro rata) p.a inc. London weighting
Contract: Fixed term (48 months)
Start date: September 2025
Hours of work: 36 hours per week
Location: Civic centre and other locations from time to time

The Post

Promoting a safe and healthy environment for the public and businesses, through education and enforcement.

You will support Private Housing Services in regulating Private rented sector to improve property conditions as well as the management of privately rented properties. You will also develop practical skills of an Environmental health Practitioner by supporting other experienced officers in in other areas, including Food safety, health and Safety and Environmental health protection.

You will be involved in a wide variety of work, which will keep your days varied and interesting whilst building your knowledge and experience.

Simultaneously undertaking a comprehensive study programme towards your apprenticeship. You will gain valuable knowledge and skills which will be an asset to the council and your career. Our apprenticeship scheme offers significant assistance with training and provides the opportunity to improve skills for future career opportunities.

The training for this role will be delivered by Middlesex University.

The Person

We are looking for someone who is ambitious, keen to learn, interested in the subject area and with the commitment to see it through. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and organised, demonstrate good communication skills, with excellent time management skills. Have a flexible and positive approach to work alongside an interest in developing a career in Town planning within the Planning team.

You will also need to show your interest in local government and the delivery of public services.

Qualifications required- Please do not apply if you do not have the qualifications listed as your application will not be considered.
• GCSE Maths & English Grade C or level 4 and above.
• At least one A level in a science or technology subject drawn from Chemistry, Biology, Human Biology, Physics, Geography, Geology, Environmental Science, Nutrition, Food Science or similar.
• Relevant or prior experiential learning may also be considered as an alternative.
• Good IT skills including knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint is desirable.
• Prospective apprentices will be required to pass the training provider selection and or application process prior to a job offer.
