Job Description

The University System of New Hampshire is hiring an Environmental Monitoring Technician in Swanzey, NH. The role involves supporting water quality and habitat monitoring, processing estuarine samples, and data management. Candidates should have a high school diploma and be enrolled in an environmental science program. The position requires communication with municipalities and basic laboratory skills. The Monitoring Technician will help PREP's Water Quality and Habitat program by performing miscellaneous duties related to both habitat and water quality monitoring. Examples of these duties include: communicating with wastewater treatment plants around effluent characteristics; processing estuarine sediment samples; and processing and analyzing existing datasets.

Duties/Responsibilities

Water Quality Loading/Concentrations (50%)
• This activity will include supporting Michelle Shattuck of the NH Water Resources Research Center as she works to assess nitrogen and sediment loading for both the Great Bay and Hampton-Seabrook Estuaries. It will include collecting water and sediment samples as well as communicating with various municipalities with regard to point-source pollution.
Estuarine Sample Processing (40%)
• PREP has a backlog of estuarine samples that need to be processed, mostly consisting of sediment samples, which need to be processed for grain size and percent organic carbon. Additional duties could include processing eelgrass and seaweed and/or some salt marsh assessment work.
Data Processing (10%)
• PREP is responsible for a significant amount of data processing and synthesis, managed by PREP's Data Scientist, Chris Whitney. An example of this work is digitizing historical data that currently only exists in reports.
Requirements

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:
• High School Diploma
• Matriculation at UNH with a environmental science related major
Required Licenses & Certifications:
• Driver's License
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Understanding of basic ecology.
• Understanding of water chemistry
• Basic experience in laboratory setting.
