The Opportunity
A great opportunity has arisen for an individual who is passionate about working within environmental services to join Castle Point BC on a permanent basis. This role requires a confident individual who enjoys interacting with the public and who can travel around the borough to spot environmental issues such as fly tipping, littering, overgrown vegetation and overflowing bins. You will be responsible for logging these issues, coordinating necessary repairs and maintenance with the Council contractors, and ensuring that street cleansing, grounds maintenance, and building cleaning services are delivered to a high standard.
Beyond inspections, you will play a key role in educating residents on responsible waste disposal and, when necessary, enforcing the legislation through fixed penalty notices.
As part of a dedicated Environment Team, your work directly contributes to creating a cleaner, safer, and more welcoming Borough for everyone who lives, works, and visits the area.
Accountabilities
To contribute to achieving the Council's corporate objectives and priorities.
To undertake programmed and ad hoc monitoring of contracted and in-house services which are the responsibility of the Commercial and Assets Directorate to manage so as to ensure that contract and service standards are being met and to take appropriate corrective action in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
To participate in education initiatives and to undertake monitoring, inspection, and enforcement duties in respect of a broad range of environmental issues, including but not limited to:
Household Refuse and Recycling Collections.
The dumping and disposal of fly tipped waste and litter.
Responsible dog ownership.
Abandoned Vehicles
Fly Posting and Graffiti
The disposal of Trade Waste
To issue Fixed Penalty Notices, undertake interviews of those suspected of committing offences, prepare witness statements and attend court as necessary to discharge the Council's responsibilities having regard to the requirements of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and other relevant legislation.
To liaise with contractors, customers, First Contact, Service Managers and other agencies to resolve day to day operational and enforcement issues.
To attend meetings with contractors as required.
The Experience You Will Bring
To be successful in this post you must possess knowledge of environmental enforcement legislation and experience of contract monitoring. You must have first class communication skills and be able to deal with a wide range of individuals and queries where you provide a high level of customer care. Strong negotiation skills combined with good levels of IT and literacy skills are also essential for this role.
