Job Description
Tilbury Douglas is seeking an experienced Environmental Manager in Birmingham, UK, to develop and implement environmental strategies focused on sustainability targets, including carbon reduction and waste management. Key responsibilities include ensuring compliance with environmental legislation, promoting sustainable practices, and engaging stakeholders. The role requires proven leadership in environmental roles, knowledge of relevant legislation, and qualifications in environmental science or sustainability.
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Environmental Manager to shape and develop our environmental strategy and operations. This role will play a critical part in achieving our sustainability targets, including waste management, biodiversity net gain, and carbon reduction. You will work closely with teams across the business, embedding environmental best practices and ensuring compliance with legislation while driving innovation and continuous improvement. This role sits within our central team and reports directly to the ESG Director.
What you will be doing - Key Responsibilities
Energy & Carbon
• Develop and support a carbon reduction strategy to achieve net-zero and other defined carbon targets.
• Identify key carbon reduction opportunities and set science-based targets to guide decarbonisation efforts.
• Ensure compliance with all carbon-related regulations, reporting frameworks, and mandatory disclosure requirements (e.g., SECR, TCFD, EU ETS).
• Stay abreast of evolving environmental legislation and carbon market mechanisms.
Waste & Resource Efficiency
• Develop and deliver a strategy to achieve zero waste to landfill, embedding circular economy principles and resource efficiency.
• Collaborate with project teams and supply chains to minimise waste generation and maximise material reuse and recycling.
Ecology
• Support initiatives to achieve a biodiversity net gain of at least 10% across all projects, integrating ecological considerations into design and delivery stages.
• Work with internal teams and external stakeholders to deliver measurable ecological improvements.
Sustainable Procurement
• Collaborate with the supply chain to promote sustainable materials, low-carbon technologies, and ethical sourcing practices.
• Drive compliance with procurement policies aligned to ESG goals, including sustainable and responsible sourcing.
Water
• Develop strategies to reduce water consumption and promote water efficiency across projects and operations.
• Support the integration of sustainable water conservation measures.
Training, Communication & Engagement
• Create training programmes to enhance environmental awareness and competency across the business.
• Develop communication strategies to engage employees, clients, and stakeholders in sustainability initiatives.
• Act as the company’s ambassador on environmental matters, representing Tilbury Douglas in industry forums, client meetings, and public engagements.
What we need from you
• Proven experience in an environmental leadership role within construction, engineering, or a related industry.
• Strong knowledge of carbon reduction, waste management, biodiversity net gain, and sustainability practices.
• Excellent understanding of environmental legislation and reporting frameworks, including ISO 14001, SECR, TCFD, and CDP.
• Experience leading teams and influencing stakeholders to drive cultural and operational change.
• Relevant qualifications in environmental science, sustainability, or a related field (e.g., IEMA, CEnv).
