Schedule: Full-time, Monday – Friday
Eastern Idaho Public Health is seeking a dedicated Environmental Health Specialist to join our team in St. Anthony. This position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on public health and environmental safety in our community by ensuring compliance with environmental health regulations and protecting public well-being.
General Information
This role involves conducting professional environmental health inspections, assessing risks, ensuring regulatory compliance, providing guidance on environmental concerns, and coordinating remediation efforts.
Work Conditions:
• May involve exposure to extreme weather, physical hazards, infectious diseases, toxic substances, and hazardous materials.
• Requires the ability to walk on uneven terrain, lift up to 50 pounds, and respond to environmental emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
• Travel within the local public health district may be necessary.
Principal Responsibilities
• Apply knowledge of environmental and public health regulations to identify risks, enforce compliance, and recommend corrective actions.
• Conduct inspections, surveys, and investigations of various facilities, including food establishments, water supplies, daycare centers, solid waste systems, sewage disposal sites, land developments, and recreational areas.
• Collect and analyze environmental samples, operate testing equipment, and respond to public health emergencies.
• Review and evaluate plans and specifications for food establishments, subdivisions, solid waste facilities, and water and sewage systems; issue permits accordingly.
• Prepare reports, serve as an expert witness, and testify in hearings related to environmental health matters.
• Provide technical guidance and educational resources to the public, industry professionals, and government officials regarding environmental laws and best practices.
Duties
• Inspect and evaluate environmental health conditions to ensure compliance with laws and standards.
• Conduct surveys, assessments, and monitoring to determine limiting factors, issue permits, and recommend corrective actions.
• Perform environmental testing and analyze results to detect pollution or contamination.
• Enforce compliance through citations, embargoes, permit suspensions, and revocations.
• Collaborate with local, state, and federal officials to develop and implement environmental policies and regulations.
• Promote public awareness of environmental health laws and provide technical assistance to industries and consumers.
• Analyze environmental assessments, policies, and regulations for potential impacts.
• Respond to public health emergencies, including working extended shifts as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in health sciences OR completion of a college-level algebra course and 30 semester/45 quarter hours in biology, chemistry, physics, or related sciences, including sanitary or environmental engineering.
• At least one year of public health experience, including facility inspections and ordinance enforcement in one or more of the following areas:
• * Food safety
• Sewage systems
• Daycare facilities
• Solid waste management
• Public drinking water
• Vector control
• Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
• Passed the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) credentialing exam.
