Job Description
The Southern Nevada Health District is hiring for multiple Environmental Health Specialist I/II positions, responsible for conducting inspections of public facilities to ensure compliance with health regulations, preparing reports, and investigating complaints. Candidates must have a bachelor's degree in a relevant field. No prior experience is required, but a valid Nevada driver's license is necessary. The role is not remote and is based in Nevada.
Job Overview
The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) announces an examination process to create an eligibility list to fill multiple vacancies for the classification of Environmental Health Specialist I/II in the Environmental Health Division. The eligibility list may be utilized to fill vacancies for this classification for up to four (4) months.
To conduct routine inspections of public facilities in order to ensure compliance with Clark County and Nevada state laws and regulations governing Environmental Health and Safety; to prepare inspection reports and issue notices of violations and needed corrections; to respond to citizen complaints as they relate to facilities, operations and conditions under the jurisdiction of the Health District; to protect the public against disease, sickness, illness and/or injury; to investigate environmental health-related epidemiological complaints; to collect samples for laboratory evaluation.
Note: This recruitment will close on or before the closing date listed above once a sufficient number of qualified applicants have been identified.
The current vacancy is in Food Operations . However, the Eligibility List created from this recruitment will fill vacancies across all Environmental Health programs.
Minimum Qualifications
Environmental Health Specialist I
Education and Training:
• Must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree which includes the satisfactory completion at least 45 quarter hours, or 30 semester hours of academic work in basic science courses, including biology, chemistry, physics, environmental health, epidemiology, public health, geology, sanitary engineering or environmental engineering, from an institution of higher education approved by the Board of Registered Environmental Health Specialists (BoREHS).
Experience:
• No experience is required
Conditions of Employment:
• Must file with the Board of Registered Environmental Health Specialists an application for a certificate of registration as an environmental health specialist trainee not later than 30 days after the date on which the person initially becomes employed as a part of the training program.
• The certificate of registration of a person as an environmental health specialist trainee (EH Specialist I) expires 3 years after the date on which the person initially becomes employed as part of the training program in which the person engages in the practice of environmental health. There is a one-time extension of one year if all conditions but passing the BoREHS examination have been met. The extension is determined by the Board.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain by date of hire, a valid Nevada driver's license
Preferred Qualifications:
• Bilingual in Spanish
Environmental Health Specialist II
In addition to the knowledge and skills of the Environmental Health Specialist I the Environmental Health Specialist II must have:
Education and Training:
• Must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree which includes the satisfactory completion at least 45 quarter hours, or 30 semester hours of academic work in basic science courses, including biology, chemistry, physics, environmental health, epidemiology, public health, geology, sanitary engineering or environmental engineering, from an institution of higher education approved by the Board of Registered Environmental Health Specialists (BoREHS).
Experience:
• Have a minimum of at least two (2) years of experience approved by the BoREHS and the SNHD in the practice of environmental health.
• May have two (2) years of service in the military forces of this State or the United States which the BoREHS and the SNHD determines is equivalent to at least 2 years of experience in the practice of environmental health.
Certification:
• Must have passed the written examination and been issued a certificate of registration as an environmental health specialist by the BoREHS.
License:
• Possession of, or ability to obtain by date of hire, a valid Nevada driver's license
• Must obtain and maintain appropriate registration and certification from Board of Registered Environmental Health Specialists required for either an Environmental Health Specialist I or II. Loss of required certification or registration by suspension, revocation, or failure to renew will result in immediate suspension and/or termination of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Bilingual in Spanish
