Job Description

The DuPage County Health Department is hiring an Environmental Health Specialist I for their Central Public Health Center in Wheaton, IL. This full-time role involves conducting inspections of public facilities, ensuring compliance with health regulations, and engaging in environmental health activities. Responsibilities include preparing reports, responding to complaints, and conducting educational presentations. A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health or a related field is required.
Our Environmental Health Department at the DuPage County Health Department is expanding and looking to fill positions on our team. We have an opening for an Environmental Health Specialist I to work at our Central Public Health Center in Wheaton. The ideal candidate will be responsible for conducting inspections of public facilities & engage in environmental health related activities; gains knowledge, interprets and applies rules and regulations of state law, local ordinances in a consistent manner.

This is a full-time position. Hours: Mon-Fri 8:00 AM -4:30PM (may include occasional evening and weekend hours)

This position includes a paid training program that includes job shadowing, e-learning modules, structured field activities, code review and certifications will be provided. Become a certified professional in food and pool safety. Maintain professional credentials on current state and federal regulations.
• Performs routine compliance inspections of retail food service, mobile vending, temporary food vendors; schools; child-care and nursing home facilities; public swimming pools; groundwater sourced private water systems; private sewage disposal systems; vector/animal disease surveillance, collection, and abatement; and other environmental health issues.
• Prepares electronic inspection reports.
• Documents all violations issues notices of corrective action and ensures future adherence through periodic follow up visits.
• Communicates clearly with permit holders.
• Responds to citizens’ complaints as they relate to environmental health issues.
• Collects environmental samples and tests as required.
• Conducts educational presentations on food safety and other general environmental health related topics.
• Provides and explains educational materials, regulations, policies, and other compliance to permit holders and the public.
• Participates in emergency response activities as assigned.
• Maintains required training, licensure and/or certification.
• Maintains confidentiality of privileged information and adheres to client privacy laws.
• Demonstrates sensitivity and understanding of other ethnic groups and cultures.
• Adheres to department guidelines for attendance and punctuality, meets established productivity standards.
• Available to respond to afterhours emergency calls on a rotating basis.
Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health, related field or a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of thirty semester hours or forty-five quarter hours in the physical and/or biological sciences.

Working skill in identifying, analyzing facts and data in order to make recommendations for compliance; ability to interpret and apply policies in a consistent manner; professional verbal and written communication; prepares documentation that is consistent with laws and regulations; maintain records and files; organize one’s work to meet deadlines; develop and maintain positive and professional relationships with internal and external customers; proficient using personal computer, applicable software and peripheral equipment
