JOB
The Wilson County Health Department is looking for a fully qualified Environmental Health Specialist for On-Site and Water Protection to join the team. Consideration will also be given to applicants who are eligible for hire as an Environmental Health Specialist Trainee (intern). HOURS: The regular work hours are from 8:00am to 5:00 pm, five days a week (Monday through Friday). Night, evening, and weekend work is performed as needed or required for environmental health related emergencies, investigations, inspections, or other activities. COMPENSATION: The minimum starting salary for a fully qualified applicant starts at $50,652 Starting salary will be based on education and direct work related experience.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The primary purpose of this position is to promote high standards of environmental sanitation in the community by using education, training, skills, ability to promote comprehensive environmental health program in compliance with state laws and rules.Essential duties of this position include but are not limited to: Responsible for the collection of water samples and providing recommendations regarding private water supplies.Site evaluation for both septic systems and private drinking water wells.Permit issuance or denial based upon state rules and local policy and procedure.Inspections of permitted systems during and after the construction process.Consultation as needed to solve issues encountered during the system installation process.Inspection of existing systems.Responsible for enforcement of State rules in the following areas: private drinking water and sewage treatment disposal systems.Other related duties that are assigned depending on the needs of the environmental health section and the requirement as set forth in the passage of applicable laws, rules, and ordinances.Additional authorizations may be recommended in other program areas and/or departments as the need arises per direction of the Immediate Supervisor or Health Director. Completion of annual required continuing education credits. This must be achieved by attendance to various workshops, meetings, seminars, etc.Physical requirements: Lifting for this position is considered heavy work requiring exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.Work Conditions: The worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Worker will be subject to extreme heat and/or extreme cold. The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Working knowledge of the design of onsite wastewater treatment systems and protection of water supplies;Ability to work through complex problems with minimal supervision;Working knowledge of environmental health laws, rules, and procedures as well as a complete understanding of the concepts of public health law;Ability to analyze and comprehend a wide variety of technical and administrative regulations, records, and reports;Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public;Ability to develop and express ideas and opinions concisely, comprehensively, and clearly in oral and written form;Ability to independently plan and schedule work activities;Ability to apply environmental health knowledge and techniques in the investigation of environmental health problems;Ability to exercise sound judgment and deal tactfully with a wide range of public contacts while enforcing public health laws and regulations;Ability to communicate with the public effectively and to speak to large groups of people in an educational setting.
