Job Description
GAI Consultants, Inc. seeks an Environmental Field Lead Specialist 1 in Canton, PA, to conduct wetland delineations and environmental investigations for energy projects. The role involves leading field surveys, data collection, and report preparation, with up to 90% travel required. Candidates should have a relevant degree and experience in environmental science. This position is eligible for a flexible hybrid work arrangement under the company's Telework Policy.
GAI Consultants is seeking an Environmental Specialist 1 to lead wetland delineations and other environmental resources field investigations for electric transmission and other energy-related projects. The successful candidate will enjoy working in a challenging, fast-paced, and team-oriented environment that will utilize their related experience to develop professionally and grow in today's global environment. This position is eligible for GAI’s flexible Hybrid workplace selection, in accordance with our Telework Policy, and a sign-on bonus.
Job Duties:
• Lead environmental field surveys including but not limited to wetland and stream delineations, endangered species surveys, environmental inspections and compliance monitoring.
• Data collection using handheld GPS.
• Prepare wetland delineation and other environmental reports.
• Must be flexible; weekly travel will be expected as part of this position (up to 90 % of the time). Fieldwork in rough terrain, exposed to weather and outdoor hazards. Travel to remote areas driving on rough roads in a variety of weather conditions. This position requires hiking 5 or more miles per day and carrying up to 40 pounds.
Qualifications:
• BS/MS degree in Biology, Environmental Science, or related field.
• Proven experience in conducting wetland delineations in OH, WV, PA, VA and/or surrounding states. Wetland delineation training and certification (PWS/WPIT) are strongly preferred.
• Thorough knowledge of/experience with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual (1987) and Regional Supplements.
• Must be familiar with local flora of the Northeast and/or Midwest and have the ability to identify upland and wetland vegetation; experience using field guides and dichotomous keys required.
• Knowledge of Section 401/404 permitting; experience conducting ORAM and HHEI/QHEI evaluations preferred, but not required.
• Ability and proven experience in conducting avian surveys a plus.
• Ability and proven experience in conducting botanical surveys a plus.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications; ArcGIS experience a plus.
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• A valid Driver’s License is required.

• Ability to hike moderate distances through unimproved terrain, utility rights-of-way, in remote areas, etc.
• Fieldwork will be conducted in variable weather and environmental conditions, often requiring long or irregular hours.
• Lift and/or move up to 40lbs.
• A commitment to safely performing job duties in these conditions is required.
General Characteristics
• Begins to demonstrate critical thinking skills, works on small projects or portions of larger projects; assist Task Managers with aspects of projects; proactively implements Quality Management System (QMS) for project deliverables.
Minimum Years Of Experience
• 4+ Years Experience
Education
• Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Sciences or similar field of study
Technical Responsibilities
• Working towards leading field studies and data collection
• Generates well written, technically sound documents with little assistance from senior staff and requiring minor edits; Agency interface; Data analysis and interpretation
• Acquires ability to research Federal, State, and local applicable environmental regulations and guidance and applies them to project specifics
• Extensive knowledge of wetland delineations; wetland restoration and wetland design; ecological field surveys; endangered species surveys (understand the requirements of the endangered species act, understand when and how to consult with these agencies, and have working knowledge of the species within the area we work), and duties as required
• May become specialized within a specific discipline; receives technical training for career enhancement.
Project and Task Management
• Works as a part of a team and coordinates work with others.
• Assists in determining schedule and budget requirements.
Management Responsibility
• Assigning and overseeing tasks under the direct supervision of the task manager and maintaining budgets and schedules; keeping very close communication with Task Managers; assisting Project Managers or Task Manager with proposal preparation; scopes of work and project component cost estimates.
• Guidance and oversight from Task Managers and Project Managers.
• No managerial responsibilities at this level.
Communication Skills
• Possess effective oral and written communication skills; interacts well with other staffs
• Interact with clients with close oversight
• Interacts closely with Project Managers and various Department Managerial Staff, performs well with client communications.
