The Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission is hiring an Environmental Engineering Intern to assist with data collection and environmental inspections related to stormwater management and small dams. The role requires a student in engineering or environmental sciences to conduct fieldwork, inspections, and data analysis. The position involves both office and outdoor work in Wheaton-Glenmont, MD, and is not remote.

Montgomery Parks is seeking a graduate or undergraduate student to join the Park Development Division (PDD) to assist with data collection and environmental inspections. The primary tasks will include inspecting Environmental Site Design (ESD) stormwater management practices for the Department’s NPDES (MS4) permit and/or inspecting small dams across the Park system. Additional responsibilities include reviewing existing and
as-built plans, scheduling site visits, confirming asset locations, taking measurements and photographs, supporting inventory mapping, performing ecological construction inspections, and gathering preliminary ecological restoration project data using ArcGIS, online databases, and field data collection.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Park Development Division is seeking a student pursuing a degree in civil, environmental, or water resources engineering, or environmental or biological sciences, geography, GIS, or a similar field to support environmental and planning initiatives. The ideal candidate will assist with data analysis, mapping, engineering, and inspections related to natural resources, environmental systems, and water resource engineering.
A successful candidate works well as part of team, is organized, and has interest and knowledge in one or more of the following:
• Data Collection
• Engineering
• Environmental Sciences
• Computer Drafting
• GIS Data Analysis
For more information about the Seasonal Hiring process and application status for Montgomery County, please contact mcp-parkscareers@montgomeryparks.org.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The selected candidate will assist with environmental inspections, data collection, and mapping activities to support the Department’s stormwater management, dam safety, and ecological restoration programs.
• Inspect Environmental Site Design (ESD) stormwater management practices for the Department’s NPDES (MS4) permit.
• Inspect and inventory small dams across the park system.
• Locate and review existing plans, as-built drawings, and previous inspection records.
• Schedule and participate in site visits to confirm asset locations and conditions.
• Take photographs, measurements, and field notes during inspections.
• Complete field inspections using an online asset management tool.
• Compile and analyze preliminary inspection results.
• Support inventory mapping of guard rails and other park infrastructure.
• Assist with ecological construction inspections and environmental monitoring.
• Gather preliminary ecological restoration project data using ArcGIS, online databases, and field data collection methods.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Ability to perform a combination of office and field work, including exposure to inclement weather and outdoor hazards.
• Ability to complete tasks independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
• Highly organized with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Preferred experience in data analytics.
• Preferred experience reading engineering plans and record drawings.
• Familiarity with a range of stormwater management and ecological restoration practices.
• Knowledge of GIS applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred qualifications include possession of a valid driver’s license and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Experience with SharePoint and OneDrive is desirable, as is a working knowledge of GIS applications such as ArcGIS, Field Maps, Survey123, AGOL, and Dashboards. Familiarity with AutoCAD and data management software is also preferred.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Position will be filled at either the undergraduate (Intern I, pay rate $17-19/hr.) or graduate (Intern II, pay rate $19-21/hr.) level, dependent upon education and experience.
• Be able to work under arduous field conditions to include walking significant distances.
• Willingness to commit to a pre-arranged schedule up to 30 hours a week over the course of your employment.
• Minimum age: 18 years old.
TRAINING:
Orientation to the Department of Parks and the Park Development Division will be provided by staff. Specific project requirements will be discussed with supervisory staff members.
Attendance and successful completion of in-house training, including an online Defensive Driving course.
