Job Description

Renown Health is seeking an Environmental Compliance Specialist in Reno, NV, responsible for managing solid waste programs, ensuring proper handling of regulated medical waste, and maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations. The role involves coordinating with staff and vendors, developing policies, conducting inspections, and providing training. Candidates should have a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in environmental compliance, with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
Position Purpose

Under the direction of department leadership, this position is responsible for defining, developing and managing all aspects of Renown’s solid waste programs. The Environmental Compliance Specialist will ensure that the regulated medical waste (RMW) accumulation, storage and disposal process is segregated appropriately by class, generator status and required documentation/labeling is in place.

Nature and Scope

Manages, defines and coordinates changes to generator status, inspects site storage location and ensures a span of control over all RMW/solid waste processes within the health system.

• Functions as a subject matter expert between onsite staff, managers, vendors and authorities with jurisdiction

• Leads effort to define environment needs/requirements of generator status per facility type.

• Maintain documentation & permits required to support all reporting functions required under regulatory agencies.

• Demonstrate a high degree of competence in the management of all solid waste activities

• Develop and maintain the programs related to RMW/solid waste within the health system.

• Create policies for review and integrity that define the above program scope.

• Complete and maintain an annual Hazard Vulnerability Analysis (HVA) for appropriate sites.

• Develop a continuous audit ready status, via testing, site inspections, document reviews.

• Function independently throughout the health system.

• Must have a working knowledge of federal (CMS, EPA), state (NAC, NVDEP)

• Provide direction and mentoring to impacted department staff and leaders.

• Evaluate vendor managed programs, performance and recommend improvement strategies.

• Ensure contracts associated with solid waste management are maintained and evaluate cost structure based on compliance, complexity and industry benchmark.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Must be able to work in a problem solving method

• Identify appropriate resources (budget, staffing, physical environment) for compliance success.

• Must demonstrate strongly the following skills and aptitudes: listening, problem solving, organizational skills, prioritization, conflict resolution, attention to detail

• Knowledge of system improvement and project management methodology.

• Analytical and problem solving skills, as well as the ability to work and communicate effectively with other departmental staff and management

• Maintain a system wide compliance dashboard.

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements - Required and/or Preferred

Education:

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English.
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering Science, or 5 years of equivalent training and experience required.

Experience:

5+ years direct experience in environmental compliance required in lieu of degree.
3+ years Healthcare experience preferred.
Project Management Experience preferred.

License(s):

Certification(s):

Hazwoper & DOT certifications required within year 1 of employment.

Computer / Typing:

Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and Word and have the ability to use the computer to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
