Job Description

Bristol Bay Native Corporation is hiring an Environmental Chemist/Biologist for a full-time position in Duluth, MN, supporting ecological and toxicological research for the USEPA. Responsibilities include analytical support, field sampling, and maintaining lab instruments. Candidates should have a degree in chemistry or biology and relevant experience. The position involves travel for fieldwork, particularly on USEPA research vessels in the Great Lakes.
SpecPro Sustainment & Environmental, LLC. (SSE) is seeking an Environmental Scientist to provide support with biology and chemistry efforts related to ecological and toxicological research. You will be working in support of SSE's contract with the USEPA's Laboratory in Duluth, MN. Job location is at EPA Laboratory. Although this is a full-time position, funding is typically on a yearly basis with EPA.

Primary Duties:

Support biology and chemistry efforts at the Great Lakes Toxicology and Ecology Division of the USEPA and aboard USEPA research vessels on the Great Lakes.
• Provide analytical support for Great Lakes research involving bulk CN isotope analysis, compound specific isotope analysis, quantitative fatty acids analysis, summarizing the data, and implementing quality assurance procedures.
• Fish dissection and tissue extractions.
• Operate and maintain analytical instruments and prepare chemical reagents related to these analyses.
• Develop and prepare written technical protocols for collecting and processing samples.
• Participate in field sampling campaigns, including preparation of materials (field sheets, labels, equipment packets, etc), and managing sample inventory chain-of-custody.
• Collect and process biotic and abiotic samples in field settings, including onboard USEPA research vessels, which may involve travel of 2-3 weeks at a time.
• Attend and participate in research planning and technical meetings as necessary to achieve task goals.

Qualifications/Skills:
• Experience working in an analytical lab setting including the use of organic solvents and acids, pipetting, microbalances.
• Experience supporting ecological research projects, collecting and processing biological samples.
• Multidisciplinary interest in both biology and chemistry.
• A passion to participate in research that supports the EPA lab's focus on freshwater ecotoxicity and freshwater coastal ecology.

Education/Experience Requirement:
• Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology or related field plus 3 years of experience or Masters degree plus 1 year of experience.

Special Requirements/Certifications:

Must pass corporate and federal background checks. Federal background checks take 2-6 weeks. Must have valid driver's license.
