About the position

The Environmental Analyst 1/Trainee 1/2 position at the New York Department of Environmental Conservation involves examining and reviewing environmental permit applications and SEQR documents, providing guidance on DEC permit jurisdictions, and managing projects related to environmental analysis. The role requires both office work and occasional field inspections, particularly focusing on mining activities and land reclamation permits.

Responsibilities
• Examine and review environmental permit applications and SEQR documents in accordance with applicable regulations and DEC policies.

• Provide guidance to the regulated community and agencies on DEC permit jurisdictions and related matters.
,
• Use computer for e-mail, word processing, permit writing, GIS, and environmental impact review and project management.
,
• Assess project impacts using a variety of detailed maps and plans.
,
• Perform occasional field work inspecting project sites, which may include rough terrain and active industrial activity.
,
• Fill a vacancy on the Mined Land Reclamation Permitting Team with a primary focus on the review of Mined Land Reclamation Permit applications and other permit applications associated with mining activities.

• Overall project management.

Requirements
• A bachelor's or higher degree in a relevant field such as environmental science, biology, chemistry, or engineering.

• For Trainee 2 level: One year of qualifying professional experience in environmental analysis or a master's degree in a relevant field.
,
• For Full Performance Level: Two years of qualifying professional experience in environmental analysis or a master's degree in a relevant field plus one year of qualifying professional experience.

Nice-to-haves
• Experience with GIS and environmental impact assessments.

• Strong communication skills for providing guidance and consultation.
