Location:

Warwick, GB, CV34 6DA

Division: NESO REMA Programme

Job Type: Full Time

Requisition Number: 65626

Department: ESO

Job Function:
Sales and Commercial
About the role

National Energy System Operator (NESO) recognises the potential of bright and talented individuals, and we encourage you to join us as Great Britain’s energy system undergoes an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

As an energy market modelling analyst in the Wholesale Market Strategy team, you will work on the design of electricity markets that support a secure, decarbonised energy system. These markets form the investment case for key Net Zero technologies such as storage, wind and interconnectors.

Your work will underpin NESO’s thinking and position on the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements as well as the development of wholesale energy markets in the long term. This will include modelling the interactions between markets, investment policy mechanisms such as Contracts for Difference and market participant commercial behaviour to help inform decision making on future market structures to support the net zero transition.

You will have the opportunity to work closely with the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero, and Ofgem. A strategic mindset, commercial approach, and the ability to understand and communicate trade-offs is essential.

This role can be based from Wokingham, Warwick or Glasgow, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.
Key Accountabilities

Using market models such as PLEXOS you will lead on the development of simulations and analysis for electricity, while considering the interactions with other energy vectors. Your investigations will provide insights and evidence to support recommendations in how Great Britain can transition to a market structure that supports the net zero transition. The role is expected to include:
• Leading on the delivery of whole energy system analysis within the wholesale market strategy team. This includes but is not limited to defining hypotheses to be tested, modelling the associated impacts on electricity markets and society, and working with other analysts within the Markets directorate within NESO and in the network planning teams.
• Developing new tools and processes that streamline the modelling workflow to promote more efficient and expansive modelling methods in support of evidence-based decision making.
• Analysing and considering multiple policy options, weighing up the economic costs and benefits of different interventions while also taking into account other consumer benefits and deliverability.
• Based on the results of analysis, developing insights that support the development of future market recommendations and communicating these to senior NESO and industry stakeholders in a clear way that can inform the direction of the NESO’s recommendations.
• Focusing on quality by documenting your processes (so that they are repeatable and transparent) providing oversight, challenge and advice to other team members, and regularly reporting on progress, risks and issues.
• Taking ownership of the relationship with other analysts contributing to NESO’s input into the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero’s Review of Electricity Market Arrangements and ensuring the wholesale market strategy team’s work aligns with the standards set across the wider team.
About you

We’re forging the path, and we know we can’t do it alone. That’s why we need visionary minds like yours to join us on this transformative journey. In this case, we’re looking for someone who:
• A logical, creative and practical approach to problem solving and ability to break down complex problems.
• An understanding of the energy sector; knowledge of electricity wholesale markets including the key players and the market structures that drive their decision making.
• Confidence using analytical software and an ability to translate data and analysis into value-adding insights, commentary and recommendations that inform decision making.…
