Job Description

The Energy Manager at the University of Maryland is responsible for optimizing energy use in hospital buildings, analyzing utility consumption, and developing purchasing strategies. This role includes guiding HVAC personnel, ensuring compliance with standards, and enhancing operational efficiency through capital planning and energy management initiatives. Candidates need a relevant degree and five years of experience, with hospital experience preferred. This is a full-time position based in Baltimore, MD.
About the position

The Energy Manager at the University of Maryland Medical System is responsible for monitoring and optimizing energy utilization across all building systems within the hospital. This role involves analyzing utility consumption, forecasting operating costs, and developing utility purchasing strategies. The Energy Manager will also provide guidance to HVAC personnel, ensure compliance with relevant standards and regulations, and work on capital planning and energy management initiatives to enhance operational efficiency.

Responsibilities
• Monitor systems operation for effective utilization of energy by all building systems.

• Analyze utility consumption and forecast monthly operating costs.
,
• Develop utility purchasing strategies and contracts in collaboration with purchasing.
,
• Provide operating guidance to HVAC personnel and monitor mechanical systems operation.
,
• Establish baseline operating performances and maintain updates for mechanical and systems equipment.
,
• Monitor cost-effective operating strategies between various energy sources available to the hospital.
,
• Communicate standards to project managers and designers to ensure compliance during design and installation processes.
,
• Review project plans and specifications for compliance with established energy utilization standards.
,
• Monitor and evaluate the physical plant capability for recommissioning to design standards.
,
• Analyze problems in system functionality and develop plans of action to maximize plant capability.
,
• Assist in the development of the infrastructure and capital replacement program.
,
• Work with the Plant Manager and Chief Engineer to implement management systems for utility distribution and consumption.

Requirements
• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.

• Five years of experience in a similar position.
,
• Demonstrated knowledge of control systems, especially computerized systems.
,
• Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local standards, codes, and regulations pertinent to the hospital environment.

• Knowledge of mechanical and electrical engineering systems and equipment utilizing energy.
,
• Ability to maneuver in utility work areas and inspect systems in various physical conditions.
,
• Highly effective written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves
• Hospital experience is preferred.
