Job Description

Mahaska Health is seeking an Emergency Services Ambulance Coordinator in Oskaloosa, IA. This full-time role involves delivering patient care, coordinating personnel, managing payroll, scheduling, and participating in quality improvement activities. The position is 50% clinical, requiring the preparation and administration of medications, staff education, and community representation. The coordinator must ensure patient safety and effective communication within the healthcare team.
At Mahaska Health the primary role of the Emergency Services Ambulance Coordinator is to deliver patient care to ill and injured patients through assessment, interventions, and transportation according to the protocols established by the Medical Director and Iowa EMS scope of practice. Coordinates personnel involved in the provision of patient care within the ambulance service. Coordinates and/or participates in performance improvement activities within the department and with first responders in the community.

Full-time: Hours are varied, will be required to help full empty shifts.

Essential Job Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To

This position is 50% clinical. The following tasks are allocated for the coordinator part of this position:
• Ambulance payroll
• Quality review of ambulance run reports.
• Coordinates shift scheduling with director of emergency services. Makes recommendations for correction of staffing issues. Provides creative solutions to staffing dilemmas.
• Ambulance service renewal prep
• Monitoring of certifications/roster
• Conducting skill checkoffs.
• Supply invoice approval.
• Participates in emergency response to Code Blue events, Rapid Response requests and provider’s requests.
• Notifies director of emergency services and/or CNO of all unusual occurrences and of any practice or staffing concerns, discipline needs, patient/physician complaints about the department.
• Assists with policy and procedure review and development.
• Assists in maintaining quality control programs including ongoing data gathering and reporting by set deadlines.
• Ensures defective items are noted, repairs are ordered or replacements.
• Performs all duties in a safe courteous, confidential and professional manner, always taking into account the well-being of the patient.
• Can make appropriate decisions and take appropriate action as they relate to the planning and coordination of services in the department.
• Handles responsibilities and problem solves issues as they arise. Seeks out advice from the director of emergency services or others as needed.
• Utilize all available resources in planning care and consults as necessary with physicians, supervisors, and interdisciplinary services.

Clinical Job Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To
• Safely prepare, administer, and document medications and IV therapy.
• Communicate pertinent information regarding patient’s status to appropriate interdisciplinary team members, in a timely manner.
• Organize workload effectively to accomplish care in timely manner.
• Participates in the orientation and education of new staff. Educates staff on new techniques, equipment, etc.
• Dedication to customer service for patients, families, visitors, physicians, and co-workers throughout the partnership.
• Assures that staff documentation provides a clear and current assessment of patient’s status. Accurately collects and records data.
• Is a role model in terms of technical skills. Can perform at a level of competency equal to or above that of the nursing personnel whom they supervise.
• Represents the department and hospital in the community. Participates in public relations activities, including educational programs and providing coverage at community events.
• Assists with staff evaluations and provides feedback as necessary regarding performance.
• Flexible and able to multi-task; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions; demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems.

• Must be able to perform the physical demands of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
• Maintains regular and reliable attendance. Attend meetings, as requested.

Job Requirements Include But Are Not Limited To,
• High School diploma, GED or equivalent.
• Current State of Iowa Paramedic certification.
• Prior experience in a clinical or emergency environment preferred.
• Valid Iowa driver's license and good driving record. MVR report will be completed upon hire.
• Able to thrive in high-pressure environments, have strong decision-making capabilities, and possess exceptional interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with patients and their families.
• Ability to remain calm and make quick decisions in high-stress situations.
• Strong knowledge of emergency medical procedures and protocols.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with patients, families, and team members.
• Physical stamina and capability to perform demanding tasks and lift patients as necessary.
• Required to have a valid driver’s license and proof of good driving record.
• Required to be current in BLS (Basic Life Support) by the standards of the American Heart Association.
• Will be required to show proof of having completed Mandatory Reporter course at the time of hire or attend within 6 months of the start date.
• Must adhere to all training requirements as mandated by Federal, State, and Professional licensure and regulatory standards.
