Job Description
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is hiring a Wildlife Conservation Technician II-Team Lead in Elizabethtown, NC. This role involves field leadership, project management, and mentoring staff while conducting surveys, research, and habitat management. Responsibilities include restoring wildlife habitats, managing access areas, operating heavy equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Candidates should have knowledge of wildlife management and experience with various tools and equipment.
About the position
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is accepting applications for a Wildlife Conservation Technician II-Team Lead for our Land & Water Access Division - Elizabethtown Depot. The Team Lead plays a vital role in providing field leadership and project management for a smaller work unit consisting of Wildlife Conservation Technicians and temporary staff. This position is responsible for mentoring and training Wildlife Conservation Technician I's while conducting biological species and human dimensions surveys, research, data collection, and population monitoring. The Team Lead also conducts fish and wildlife habitat management and infrastructure management on state owned lands or waterways. This position is primarily responsible for managing the day-to-day Game Land Management Operations, and the maintenance of Boating Access Areas and Public Fishing Areas in the Southern Coast Work Area.
Responsibilities
• Restoring and Improving fish and wildlife habitats for all endangered and game species
,
• Enhancing wildlife populations through cultural practices
,
• Providing hunting opportunities for sportsmen
,
• Managing wildlife openings
,
• Creating early successional habitats
,
• Restoring altered ecosystems
,
• Supporting research and survey efforts that aid in the long-term management and identification of species and habitats
,
• Prescribed burning
,
• Maintaining and renovating boating access areas, public fishing areas and Aids to Navigation on waterways
,
• Maintenance of roads, dikes, trails, game land boundary, docks, piers, navigation aids and parking areas
,
• Operating heavy equipment, including farm tractors, crawler tractors, mowers trucks and other heavy equipment
,
• Ensuring all activities and projects are completed safely, in a timely manner and in compliance with all applicable policies and laws
,
• Maintaining inventories, depots, public use facilities, bridges and coordinating development or construction projects
Requirements
• Knowledge of wildlife management, fish management, wildlife habitats, land management, forest management or agriculture practices
,
• Experience operating or maintaining a variety of equipment and tools (such as agricultural machinery, large commercial highway vehicles w/trailers, ATVs, fire pumper units, weather instruments, watercraft, chainsaws, welders, 2-way radios, power hand tools or shop tools)
,
• Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 90 days of hire
,
• Possession of a North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required within 12 months of employment
,
• Possession of a North Carolina Pesticide Applicators license is required within 6 months of employment
,
• Ability to work primarily outdoors, in all kinds of weather conditions
,
• Ability to perform manual labor, lifting medium to heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds daily
,
• Ability to wear safety equipment and follow established safety regulations and procedures
