Electrical Grid Engineer (Mid - Senior) - Utility Scale

Smart4Energy is seeking a Mid-Senior Electrical Grid Engineer to lead grid connection processes for renewable energy projects in South Africa. Responsibilities include designing grid integration, collaborating with EPC teams, and engaging with public bodies. Candidates should have a degree in Electrical Engineering, 5+ years of experience in grid design, and knowledge of South African Grid Code. This is a full-time position based in Cape Town.

We are seeking an experienced Grid Engineer to play a key role in shaping South Africa’s energy future. As the main interface with TSO and DSO entities like Eskom and NTCSA, you will lead the grid connection process for cutting-edge renewable energy projects. From concept to commercial operation, you'll drive the integration of substations, power lines, and hybrid energy solutions, making a real impact in the transition to clean energy.

Duties & Responsibilities
• Take ownership of all grid integration designs and technical queries
• Provide expert electrical design input for grid planning studies and initial grid connection applications (Eskom CEL)
• Work closely with the EPC team to develop technical specifications, manage grid execution tenders, and secure the best contractors
• Collaborate with public bodies, communities, and government institutions to navigate permits and approvals for electrical designs
• Represent the company in industry forums and working groups, engaging with Eskom and municipalities to pioneer innovative grid solutions
• Support business and project development teams by forecasting, planning, and optimizing the project pipeline

Desired Experience & Qualification
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
• 5+ years of experience in grid design and integration of renewable energy projects
• Expertise in electrical system design, including substations, power lines, and hybrid energy solutions
• Deep knowledge of South African Grid Code, Eskom standards, and grid connection processes
• Experience managing grid applications, from CEL acceptance to commercial operation
• ECSA registration
