About the Role
We are looking to hire an Electrical Engineer for a 12-month maternity leave contract commencing February 2025 with the possibility of extension. The position would be located at our Wolfe Island Wind Farm but will support the entire Wind and Limited Partnership (LP) gas fleet across North America.
Responsibilities
• Work with the Plant Engineering Team to ensure safe and reliable operation of the plant by application of Engineering principles, practices, and technical standards.
• Provide technical support to daily operations and maintenance activities.
• Support the fleet's compliance program in Ontario, Alberta, and New Brunswick market rules (NERC, IESO, AESO, NBSO, etc.) and act as the internal Reliability Standard Process Owner for LP Gas and Wind Fleet.
• Create high-level scoping documents including cost estimates and justifications for selected capital projects, and act as a resource and plant customer during design, implementation, and commissioning.
• Supply technical support during maintenance of facility digital relays upgrades. Document engineering requests during the outage and create outage reports for future reference.
• Identify opportunities for plant productivity, reliability, safety, and environmental performance.
• Optimize equipment performance and costs through improved maintenance operating procedures and design improvements following on-site management of change standards.
• Provide problem definitions and scoping studies on deficiencies recommending solutions through upgrades, redesign, revised operating, or maintenance procedures.
• Coordinate engineering changes and ensure they are effectively integrated into existing systems per Management of Change guidelines.
• Ensure the consistent application of TransAlta's design standards, processes, and equipment guidelines.
• Provide technical support to capital projects, oversee commission activities, site inspections, factory inspections, and major site maintenance activities and outages.
• Business travel as required.
About You
Qualifications
• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Registered professional engineer (P. Eng.) preferred; however, E.I.T.s will also be considered.
• 3+ years of Professional Engineering experience in a power plant, substations, or another industrial environment is preferred; however, strong new graduate candidates will also be considered and are encouraged to apply.
• Multidisciplinary experience in different power plant areas and processes will be a definite asset.
• Full driving license required.
Desired Technical Knowledge
• NERC, IESO, and ESA compliance requirements (System Impact Assessments, Equipment Registration, ESA Planned Reviews, and other documents and procedures).
• 230KV ring bus protection circuits, synchronizing circuits; specifying, designing, installing, commissioning, operating, blocking, maintaining, and testing.
• (N6S & N7S) 230kV transfer trip protection circuits to Hydro One; specifying, designing, installing, commissioning, operating, blocking, maintaining, and testing.
• HV, MV, LV Switchgear, Breakers, Transformers, Cables.
• Electronic SEL and GE relays; settings, testing, alarm and fault analysis data (wave forms, etc.).
• UPS and DC battery charger systems and emergency generators.
• Safety requirements for electrical systems (arc flash and voltage boundaries, grounding, energized work procedures, and other maintenance and operating procedures and equipment isolation).
• Ability to create electrical project scopes/drawings, equipment specifications, bid packages, etc. (and where required ESA Plan Review Documents, IESO System Impact Study Applications).
Other Requirements
• Successful completion of pre-employment testing is a condition of employment.
