Job Description

The Environmentalist I position at the State of New Hampshire involves collecting and analyzing ecological data, updating databases on rare species, and providing technical assistance to various agencies. About the position

The Environmentalist I position at the State of New Hampshire involves collecting, entering, processing, analyzing, and representing ecological data for environmental reviews. The role focuses on updating and expanding the Natural Heritage Bureau databases with occurrences of rare species and natural communities, ensuring data accuracy, and providing technical assistance to various agencies and the public regarding ecological information.

Responsibilities
• Evaluate potential short and long-term benefits or negative impacts to rare species and/or natural community systems from proposed projects.

• Make recommendations to conserve, protect and/or minimize negative impacts to rare species and/or natural community systems.
,
• Respond to requests for information and review projects proposed by various agencies to provide scientifically accurate information on ecological areas.
,
• Review and analyze data for accuracy, completeness, and quality control purposes.
,
• Enter data and maintain rare species and/or natural community system data in NHB's databases.
,
• Document all source materials and modifications made to original data during mapping and transcription.
,
• Summarize data, prepare reports, and make recommendations to research and conserve rare species and natural community systems.
,
• Prepare and present ecological information to interested parties and for use by administrative-level managers.
,
• Provide technical assistance to federal and state agencies, public and municipal groups, and individuals regarding information on rare species and/or natural community systems.
,
• Assist NHB staff with botanical and natural community field surveys when other duties allow.
,
• Collect survey data, including identifying plant species present in the area.
,
• Prepare documentation for entry into the NHB database.
,
• Achieve, maintain and apply proficiency of computer programs, including ArcGIS and Microsoft Access.

Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in ecology, botany, environmental science, biology, zoology, or a related natural resources degree.

• One year of experience as an Environmentalist or in a related field.

• Eligibility to obtain a driver's license.

Nice-to-haves
• Experience and proficiency with data entry, database software, and GIS mapping software.

• Familiarity with Natural Heritage methodology.

• Basic understanding of plant community ecology.
