Job Description
CanNorth is seeking a Senior Environmental Risk Assessor with at least 8 years of experience to join their risk assessment team in Markham, ON. The role involves leading risk assessments, data management, and preparing technical reports. A hybrid work arrangement is preferred, with 1-2 days in the office, but fully remote candidates may also be considered. A Master’s degree in a relevant field is required.
Canada North Environmental Services (CanNorth) is an established First Nations owned environmental services firm with an impeccable track record and a highly respected reputation, with offices in Saskatchewan and Ontario. We work on projects covering a wide variety of sectors including Northern projects that benefit Indigenous groups.
CanNorth formed a Risk Division in 2016 with Dr. Harriet Phillips and Stacey Fernandes at the head. These two individuals are highly respected risk assessors with over 25 years experience within the contaminated sites arena (Northern and Ontario) as well as the mining and uranium industry. Our RA team works on a wide range of projects including fate and transport modelling, radioactivity, PFAS, northern abandoned mines, O.Reg. sites, international sites, to name a few. Currently we are working with the Nuclear Waste Management Authority (NWMO) on the Deep Geological Repository site in Ignace as well as with Ontario Power Generation on location of new energy sites. Other clients we work with are various ESA firms, Crown Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, Public Services and Procurement Canada, Cameco, Orano, Denison, Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, Environment and Climate Change Canada, to name a few. We are seeking to hire an Environmental Risk Assessor with at least 8 years’ experience, to join our dynamic risk assessment team in Markham, ON.
Work Location: Hybrid arrangement preferred, with 1–2 days per week in the office. However, highly skilled candidates unable to relocate will also be considered for fully remote work.
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Risk Assessment Division Manager, the Environmental Risk Assessor will take a leadership role in managing and completing project deliverables while also collaborating on a diverse range of risk assessment initiatives.
Responsibilities will include:
• Leading and completing risk assessments, data management and quantitative analyses
• Preparation of technical reports
• Completing screening/qualitative reports
• Preparing cost estimates and proposals
• Developing clear language materials, reports and presentations
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
• Master’s Degree in chemical or environmental engineering, or environmental science. Applicants with an alternate educational background such as chemistry in conjunction with work experience directly applicable to this role, will be considered
• A minimum of 8 years’ experience conducting human and ecological risk assessments.
• Experience conducting O. Reg 153/04 assessments and federal risk assessments
• Experience performing quantitative analysis
• Data analysis, statistics, and use of advanced functions in Excel
• Excellent written and oral communications skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Creative mindset and problem-solving skills
• Strong client service attitude, responsiveness and sense of urgency
