As an Environmental Health Specialist within the Gilmer County Environmental Health Department at the Georgia Department of Public Health, you will join a dedicated group of public health professionals that help support the overall mission and vision of protecting the lives of Georgian residents in a variety of ways.

Location: Gilmer County Environmental Health Department in Ellijay, GA.

Job Responsibilities

Under supervision, assists in performing inspections, interviews, and technical reviews for an environmental health program in a public health department. Assists in investigating complaints and recommending enforcement action as necessary.
• Evaluates programs for compliance with the Georgia environmental health regulations.
• Provides public health inspections and services in the areas of on-site sewage management systems, animal bite investigations, food service establishments, public swimming pools, tourist accommodations, and body art studios.
• Responds to public health emergencies as requested and needed. All county public health employees are deemed essential in the event of an emergency and are required to participate in emergency functions.
• Must be a team-oriented entry-level individual with strong communication and time management skills.
• Able to drive a company and/or personal vehicle for daily work.
• Occasional lifting up to 40 lbs. may be required.
• Frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, standing, and walking may be required.
• Must be able to work in a variety of indoor and outdoor climates.
• Work involves daily travel within the county for inspection duties.
• May travel to other counties within the district for daily work.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, which includes the completion of 27 semester or 40 quarter hours in laboratory sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology, geology, physics, etc.).

Current State employees are subject to State Personnel Board rules regarding salary.

CBH accepts educational credential recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and/or the US Department of Education (DOE) will be considered.

All positions require criminal history record check. Required education credentials, license, certification and/or registration must be submitted prior to employment in the position. Some positions require pre-employment drug testing in which the applicant who is offered the position will be required to successfully complete.
