Job Description

Michigan State University is hiring a Driver Collection/Hauler I in East Lansing, MI. This role involves operating vehicles to collect and deliver refuse and recyclables, providing customer service, and maintaining equipment. The position offers a pay rate of $19.58 - $20.61 and includes benefits like free healthcare and retirement contributions. Regular in-person attendance is required, and the job is not eligible for remote work.
Position Summary

Pay rate: $19.58 - $20.61 upon meeting probationary period requirements. MSU Benefits - Free comprehensive health care for you and your family as well as a 10% contribution toward your retirement; Generous sick, vacation, personal, and holiday time. This position is not eligible for remote work. Regular in-person attendance is required to meet business and customer needs.

This position will provide responsive customer service through the operation of vehicles and equipment to collect and deliver refuse and recyclable materials to appropriate destinations.

Job responsibilities are as follows:
35%: Operate a commercial vehicle of GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) less than 26,000 lb. and/or assist Heavy Equipment Operator/Hauler, or other Driver Collection/Hauler, in route duties to collect and unload recycling and surplus materials at designated sites.

35%: Install, service, exchange, or remove containers, or surplus items. Inspect and clean retrieval areas and vehicle as instructed.

10%: Data Collection and Maintenance: Operate a hand-held device to accurately record collection data. Provide routine maintenance on trucks and containers.

10%: Oversee the work of student employees. Perform other duties as assigned.

10%: Correspondence through email, training, meetings and professional development.

Minimum Requirements
• Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
• One year satisfactory experience in residential or commercial recycling or waste management operations.
• Possession or attainment of an MSU forklift operator's permit prior to the completion of the applicable probation or trial period.
• Possession of a valid Michigan Chauffeur Driver's License at time of hire. Applicant must have a good driving record and submit their license number on their application form for a motor vehicle record check.
• Must drive University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification.
• May require frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds.

Work Hours

NON-STANDARD/VARIABLE WORK HOURS: Monday through Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm, and may require after-hours, weekend and holiday work.

Summary of Physical Demands

Lifting material from floor and placing in carts. Lifting and dumping recycling containers. Up to 75 lb. for up to 3 hrs in a typical day.

Carrying surplus items and recyclables from rooms or outside to carts. Up to 50 lbs for distance of 200 feet for up to 2 hours in a typical day.

Pushing carts of surplus, recycling, trash, and food waste using carts and dollies.

Climbing stair to get on and off trucks and up to the sort line.
