DPWES provides award-winning solid waste collection services for approximately 45,000 homes, operates a transfer station and landfill, regulates solid waste services, and leads sustainability initiatives to promote zero waste goals for Fairfax County. DPWES Solid Waste is a diverse work force of approximately 300 merit and 50 non-merit employees and has an annual operating budget of more than $100M. Our nationally recognized team of professionals are working together towards a singular goal: providing environmentally responsible and cost-effective management of municipal solid waste, keeping Fairfax County safe, green, healthy, and clean.

Under direction of the DPWES Deputy Director, Solid Waste Management Program (SWMP), directs the daily activities of the SWMP operations at the I-66 Transfer Station Complex location.

Coordinates collections, transfer, and disposal and/or diversion activities with the Reworld Thermomechanical Treatment Facility, organics processors, and/or material recovery facilities. Directly supervises facility management, with responsibility for the general oversight of all operational staff. Responsible for sustainable solid waste management program planning from an operations perspective, incorporating waste reduction and zero waste strategies into the County’s services. Collaborates with the Division of Sustainability, Engineering, and Environmental Compliance on capital projects, facility regulatory and environmental compliance, and infrastructure. Monitors state and federal regulatory and legislative discussions and changes, providing analysis of potential impact to the County. Oversees business operations, equipment coordination, needs analysis, and procurement efforts for the SWMP. Ensures proper operation of the computerized scale system, facility financial processes, and customer services. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, participates in strategic planning for the Department and Solid Waste Management Program. Provides administrative oversight on human resources, budget, and IT needs of division. Identifies budgetary needs of the division and monitors expenditures. Ensures a safe work culture within the agency. Supports countywide emergency/disaster response efforts.Job Type: FT Salary W BN
