Job Description

The Director of Health Education & Outreach at Sustainable Resources Center in Minneapolis, MN, leads efforts to combat lead poisoning and other health hazards in homes. Responsibilities include managing staff, conducting in-home visits, case management, community engagement, and developing educational materials. The role requires a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and experience in community health education and supervision. The position involves direct interaction with clients and community events.
Lead poisoning in children continues to be a national health crisis. Furthermore, the home can be the source of other health and safety hazards resulting in additional health issues, such as asthma.

SRC’s Director of Health Education and Outreach plays a critical role in the fight against these and other serious health problems by overseeing the effort to identify and serve families and homes that need our help. Our clients are income-qualified and receive all services free of charge. We partner primarily with the State of Minnesota, Hennepin County and the City of Minneapolis for funding and reporting.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:

The Director manages the Health Education & Outreach Department, including a staff of one to three Community Health Educators along with up to three student interns. This includes activities such as:

· supervising staff to accomplish the department’s work;

· participating directly in accomplishing the work when needed;

· internal administration including summarizing and reporting work vs. grant and contract objectives;

· communicating with state, county, and city agencies;

· developing educational materials;

· recruiting current public health students to serve as interns, and

· identifying and pursuing event opportunities for SRC.

The primary activities within this department are:

In-home Visits: Staff visit client homes to identify lead paint hazards, conduct healthy homes assessments, and deliver education & light duty healthy homes products and materials.

Case Management: Case management consists of collecting client information and facilitating application to a grant program to have lead hazards removed from the home and/or healthy homes improvements made to the home, at no cost to the resident. Persistent contact and follow-up with clients are required.

Community Events: At community events, staff actively engage with the public and event attendees by providing information and answering questions about lead poisoning prevention and healthy homes issues. In addition, lead poisoning screening is offered at most events. This is accomplished by inviting children and pregnant individuals for free blood lead tests via finger stick performed at SRC’s van by a qualified medical professional. SRC has the only mobile lead testing van in the nation – the “Leadie Eddie” van.

Education: Lead Safe Work Practices classes and Healthy Homes classes are taught as to community health workers, clinics, educators, and others. Staff also give age-appropriate presentations about lead safety and other home health topics at local schools, daycares, preschools and parent groups.

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Bachelor’s Degree in Community/Public Health, Social Work or related field

- Several years of direct community health engagement/education experience

- Strong outgoing and extroverted personality who is comfortable sourcing events and clients, establishing relationships, and making presentations

- Supervisory experience

- Ability to relate to and communicate effectively with individuals from many different cultures and socioeconomic situations

- Persistence to follow up with clients to complete application materials for them to be enrolled in free services

- Valid driver's license, relatively clean driving record and daily access to an insured automobile; comfortable occasionally driving the Leadie Eddie van

- Experience with Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Teams, etc.)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Master’s degree in Community/Public Health, Social Work or related field

- Fluently bilingual in another language spoken in the Twin Cities (e.g., Spanish, Hmong or Somali), particularly Spanish

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This is a full-time exempt position eligible for paid time off, paid vacation, paid holidays, 401(k) with employer match, employer-subsidized medical and dental insurance, employer-paid life insurance, short-term and long-term disability benefits, and phone and clothing stipends.
