Job Description

The Illinois Environmental Council is hiring a full-time Director of Energy Policy based in Chicago or Springfield, IL. The role involves advocating for renewable energy, coalition building, and stakeholder education. Responsibilities include drafting materials, organizing events, and engaging with legislators. Candidates should have strong communication skills, knowledge of clean energy policy, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Evening and weekend work may be required, along with occasional travel.
About the Position

The Illinois Environmental Council Education Fund (IECEF) is seeking a dedicated and experienced individual for the role of Director of Energy Policy. As a member of our energy programs team, you will play a crucial role in power sector advocacy, supporting our mission in coalition building, stakeholder education, and advocacy for renewable energy deployment across Illinois. This full-time position will report to the Chief of Staff and can be situated in Springfield or Chicago, IL.

This position is full-time and may require evening and weekend work, along with occasional travel within Illinois.

Responsibilities
• Education
• Draft educational materials for key stakeholders.
• Communicate environmental priorities through public speaking and outreach efforts.
• Organize and conduct events and tours with decision-makers and stakeholders.
• Coalition Building
• Administer and lead coalitions, including setting agendas and meeting strategies.
• Consult with affiliates to leverage their expertise.
• Collaborate with partner organizations to create and execute effective strategies.
• Policy and Advocacy
• Establish relationships and attend meetings with legislators and decision-makers.
• Testify in the state legislature on clean energy topics as needed.
• Engage with stakeholders to support environmental champions in key regions.
• Develop legislative priorities and assist in drafting bills for clean energy initiatives.
• Monitor policy trends and local renewable energy projects.
• Support the implementation of the Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act.
• Develop expertise in assigned issue areas, focusing on the power sector and clean energy economy.
• Organizational Leadership
• Contribute to fundraising efforts, including grant applications and reporting.
• Engage with IEC affiliate members as needed.

Additionally, you may be assigned other responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications
• Strong knowledge of clean energy policy and the Illinois policy-making process.
• Experience in advocacy or political campaigns is a plus.
• Deep passion for environmental advocacy and social justice.
• Excellent project management capabilities.
• Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with diverse groups.
• Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
• Proficiency in Zoom and both Microsoft and Google software suites.
• Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks autonomously.
• Strong writing skills, capable of producing clear summaries and reports.
• Experience or interest in public interest work, advocacy, or lawmaking.

Physical Requirements:
• Ability to operate a computer.
• Sit for extended periods.
• Participate in meetings, events, or outdoor activities that can last long hours.
• Communicate and exchange information effectively.

About Our Pay and Benefits

This full-time permanent Director position offers a salary range of $80,000 to $100,000, commensurate with experience, alongside benefits like health and dental insurance, a 401(k) plan, and vacation.
