Job Description
ECU Health is hiring a Director of Energy and Sustainability in Greenville, NC, to lead sustainability initiatives across healthcare operations. The role involves developing a sustainability strategy, improving energy efficiency, and ensuring regulatory compliance. Candidates should have a relevant degree, at least 7 years of experience in energy management or sustainability, and strong project management skills. The position requires regular travel to various ECU Health facilities.
Position Summary
ECU Health is committed to advancing sustainability and environmental stewardship across our healthcare operations and facilities while supporting our mission to improve the health and well-being of eastern North Carolina communities. We are seeking a Director of Energy and Sustainability to lead our comprehensive sustainability initiatives while ensuring alignment with healthcare industry standards and regulatory requirements.
In this role, you will develop and execute ECU Health's sustainability strategy across our healthcare facilities portfolio, driving measurable improvements in energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and environmental performance. You will collaborate with clinical teams, facility management, and executive leadership to integrate sustainability practices into daily operations while maintaining the highest standards of patient care and safety.
This position is based in Greenville, North Carolina, with regular travel to ECU Health facilities throughout eastern North Carolina.
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability, or related technical field
• Minimum 7 years of experience in energy management or sustainability, preferably in healthcare or critical infrastructure environments
• Professional certifications such as CEM (Certified Energy Manager), LEED AP, or equivalent preferred
• Deep understanding of healthcare facility operations, including critical systems, infection control requirements, and regulatory compliance
• Experience with energy management systems, building automation, and utility data analysis
• Knowledge of healthcare environmental regulations including EPA, OSHA, and Joint Commission standards
• Proven track record of delivering measurable energy savings and sustainability improvements
• Strong project management skills with experience managing capital improvement projects
• Excellent analytical skills with proficiency in energy modeling and financial analysis tools
• Outstanding communication and presentation skills for engaging diverse stakeholder groups
• Ability to work collaboratively with clinical staff while respecting patient care priorities
• Experience with sustainability reporting frameworks and carbon accounting methodologies
• Willingness to travel throughout eastern North Carolina to ECU Health facilities
• Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in related field, experience in healthcare facility management or clinical operations, knowledge of North Carolina utility markets and renewable energy opportunities, and familiarity with healthcare waste management and pharmaceutical disposal regulations
• Experience with ENERGY STAR certification and healthcare facility benchmarking
• Understanding of healthcare emergency preparedness and business continuity planning
• Experience working in rural or regional healthcare system
