Global Energy Monitor is hiring a Data Visualization Editor for their Communications team, responsible for creating engaging data visualizations to support storytelling related to climate change. The role involves collaborating with researchers, translating complex datasets into visuals, and ensuring clarity and accessibility. Preference is given to candidates in the U.S., but remote work is available globally, as GEM operates without a central office.
PositionGlobal Energy Monitor is seeking an experienced Data Visualization Editor for our Communications team. Use your knack for discovering stories and connecting the dots across complex datasets to address the most important challenge of our time: climate change. This role will be responsible for helping bring to life the robust insights found in our global power trackers, which are regularly referred to by the world’s leading media organizations, international agencies, policy makers, and energy and climate professionals around the world. The Data Visualization Editor will be responsible for enhancing GEM’s storytelling across our external communications — including print, digital, and interactive content — by furthering a strategic approach to data visualization design.The ChallengeAccording to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), we have less than a decade to make massive and unprecedented changes in the global economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To meet that challenge, Global Energy Monitor is creating trackers and other tools to provide detailed information on energy facilities, sponsors, and financing.About Global Energy MonitorGlobal Energy Monitor (GEM) is a network of researchers developing information for the worldwide climate and clean energy movement. Since the organization’s founding in 2007, GEM’s research has become an essential tool for activists, journalists, policymakers, and scientists. GEM’s data and reports are used and cited by organizations ranging from Greenpeace to The Wall Street Journal. GEM’s information is used by Bloomberg Terminals, the International Energy Agency, the IPCC, Climate Analytics, Carbon Tracker Initiative, and hundreds of others.LocationPreference will be given to those living in the United States, however, GEM may be able to hire employees worldwide in countries where our PEO (Deel) operates, except in countries classified as Level 3 or 4 on the U.S. Department of State’s website. GEM does not have a central office; instead, GEM works with employees to create suitable home offices catered to the needs of their role.Responsibilities and DutiesDesign, support and develop data visualizations for reports and editorial content, together with researchers and program staff.Translate complex datasets into clear, engaging, and visually appealing graphics.Collaborate with programmatic teams to craft compelling data-driven stories around dataset releases.Ensure visual accuracy and clarity by applying data storytelling principles.Use design tools (Adobe Illustrator, Figma, etc.) and data visualization software (Flourish, D3.js, etc.) to create high-quality visuals.Work with structured and unstructured data, cleaning and organizing datasets as needed.Ensure accessibility and inclusivity in all visualizations.Stay up-to-date with emerging trends in data visualization, design, and journalism.Pitch media and other stakeholders on GEM data and its many applications.Required QualificationsApplicants who tailor their resume and cover letter to these requirements will be prioritized. We take the time to consider each candidate individually.The following experience and skills are required for this position:5+ years of experience working with data visualization.Fluency in English.Strong skills in at least one visualization technology for digital graphics. Comfort handling and analyzing datasets, either in spreadsheets or programming languages.Excellent written skills and ability to adapt narratives for different target audiences.Ability to translate data into compelling narratives using strong writing skills.Experience in graphic design.Experience in using one or more programming languages, ideally used to create production-ready data visualizations.An understanding of the energy and climate policy landscape.Preferred QualificationsExperience in a newsroom setting.Experience working remotely and independently while being a strong team player.Passion for the latest trends in data visualization storytelling.Established media network of reporters in the fields of data journalism and energy, preferably with experience working in journalism.Track record of pitching and publishing stories in top tier media.Strategic thinker with a track record of implementing organizational-wide change.Pay and BenefitsThis is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week, work-from-home position. The salary is $105,429.26.Locations outside of the US: GEM aims to offer comparable salaries, benefits, and leave to employees living outside of the US in line with our fully transparent compensation framework.
