About the position

Global Energy Monitor is seeking an experienced Data Visualization Analyst to enhance storytelling through data visualization in the context of climate change. This role involves utilizing complex datasets to create compelling visual narratives that support the organization's communications strategy, particularly in relation to global power trackers used by media, policymakers, and climate professionals.

Responsibilities
• Further develop GEM's data visualization strategy as part of a renewed communication and branding strategy.

• Design visualizations for GEM's data updates, briefings, and flagship reports using advanced data visualization tools.
,
• Develop and regularly produce and pitch stories using GEM trackers and other data sets for media and practitioners in the climate and energy space.
,
• Create intuitive, visually appealing charts, graphs, and infographics to present data clearly and compellingly.
,
• Provide visual, technical, editorial, and design support to GEM staff.
,
• Develop staff skills on presentation design and critical data visualization communication.

Requirements
• 5+ years of experience working with data visualization, preferably in a newsroom setting.
,
• Strong skills in at least one visualization technology for digital graphics (D3, Flourish, Adobe Illustrator, etc.).
,
• Comfort handling and analyzing datasets, either in spreadsheets or programming languages.
,
• Ability to translate data into compelling narratives using strong writing skills.
,
• Passion for the latest trends in data visualization storytelling.
,
• Experience in graphic design.
,
• Experience using one or more programming languages to create production-ready data visualizations.
,
• An understanding of the energy and climate policy landscape.
,
• Experience working remotely and independently while being a strong team player.
,
• English fluency.

• Established media network of reporters in data journalism and energy fields, preferably with journalism experience.

• Track record of pitching and publishing stories in top tier media.
