The Data Scientist II position at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory focuses on advancing energy technology analytics within the Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division. About the position
The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division (EIBD) of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is at the forefront of advancing a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through both basic and applied research. The division leverages a robust technical foundation in power and energy systems, coupled with advanced data analytics, to drive innovation, transform markets, and influence energy policy. Within this framework, the Energy Technology Deployment Group is composed of a diverse team of analysts, advisors, scientists, and engineers who are dedicated to exploring all facets of building energy systems. This includes efficient technologies, alternative energy resources, resource extraction, and the national and local impacts of policy, as well as the interaction between human and natural systems. A significant focus of the group is to develop methodologies that facilitate the deployment of technologies and practices into the market, aimed at enhancing energy efficiency, decarbonizing buildings, increasing resiliency, and supporting a sustainable economy. The Data Scientist II position is integral to the Energy Technology Deployment Group, where the successful candidate will engage in research that addresses critical questions related to building energy science and technology performance. This includes analyzing building energy impacts, forecasting future energy-efficient technology adoption, assessing market impacts of potential electric grid enabling technologies, and conducting various energy efficiency and renewable energy analyses. The role requires collaboration in a cross-disciplinary environment, utilizing a variety of modeling tools and approaches across multiple technical domains. The Data Scientist will work closely with other PNNL analysts, engineers, and scientists, as well as external collaborators, to publish scholarly papers in open literature and participate in both national and international research initiatives. This position is pivotal in several cutting-edge interdisciplinary research projects at PNNL, where the candidate will be expected to demonstrate the ability to transfer skills across different application domains and be accountable to the Building Systems Technical Group Leader for developing technical expertise and communicating infrastructure needs.

Requirements
• BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience, or MS/MA, or PhD.

• Degree in Computer, Cyber, or Data Science/Analytics preferred.
,
• Demonstrated understanding of building energy systems and science.
,
• Experience with computer-based data acquisition, controls, and analysis tools and languages.
,
• Proficiency in programming languages including Python, R, SQL, and Java.
,
• Experience with data analysis libraries such as Selenium, Requests, NLTK, Pandas, PySpark, and ArcGIS tools.

• Experience in database management and skills (mySQL, SQL Server Management Studio).
,
• Ability to work well in a collaborative team environment.
Nice-to-haves
• Knowledge of VBA, C/C++.

• Experience with searching and collecting data from the U.S. Patent Office website.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Access, Excel).
