Job Description

SpaceX is seeking a Counsel, Environmental in Los Angeles, CA, to provide legal counsel on U.S. federal and state environmental laws. This role involves ensuring compliance with regulations, developing legal strategies, and maintaining relationships with stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have a Juris Doctor degree, be an active licensed attorney with over 5 years of experience in environmental law, and possess knowledge of relevant federal and state laws.
About the position

SpaceX's growing manifest and infrastructure has created an opportunity to add the Counsel, Environmental position to the Legal team. This person will be the primary responsible attorney for providing legal counsel and strategic guidance on matters related to U.S. federal and state environmental laws. The Counsel, Environmental will play a crucial role in ensuring that SpaceX complies with all relevant environmental regulations while supporting the company's ambitious goals in aerospace and exploration. This position requires a deep understanding of environmental law and the ability to navigate complex legal frameworks to mitigate risks and facilitate SpaceX's operations. The Counsel will provide expert advice and guidance on U.S. federal environmental laws, including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Endangered Species Act (ESA), Clean Water Act (CWA), and Clean Air Act (CAA). Additionally, the attorney will advise on requirements under California, Texas, and Florida environmental laws, developing legal strategies for federal and state environmental review processes. This role involves drafting and conducting legal reviews of NEPA documents and various permits, as well as researching and drafting environmental litigation and administrative proceeding motions, orders, briefs, and declarations. A key aspect of this position is to develop and maintain positive working relationships with internal stakeholders and federal and state officials involved in SpaceX's environmental review processes. The Counsel will identify and clearly explain to internal stakeholders the legal risks, options, and ramifications under environmental laws and regulations, helping the business mitigate legal risks effectively. This position is essential for ensuring that SpaceX can continue to innovate and expand while adhering to environmental laws and regulations.

Responsibilities
• Provide expert advice and guidance on U.S. federal environmental laws, including NEPA, ESA, CWA, and CAA.

• Advise on requirements under California, Texas, and Florida environmental laws.

• Develop legal strategies for federal and state environmental review processes.

Requirements
• Juris Doctor degree
,
• Active licensed attorney
,
• 5+ years of experience working with U.S. federal environmental laws.

Nice-to-haves
• Comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of U.S. federal environmental laws

• Familiarity with environmental laws in California, Texas, and/or Florida
,
• Experience with litigation and administrative proceedings

• Experience working with U.S. federal agencies, such as U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers

• Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally and build strong relationships with other business groups and/or clients.

• Pay range: Counsel: $190,000.00 - $230,000.00/per year
