The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is hiring a full-time temporary Conservation Technician to support aquatic species conservation in the state’s central river basins. Based at Sykes Depot in Mebane, NC, this position is ideal for candidates with strong field skills and a passion for freshwater ecology.

Description

This temporary role supports the Aquatic Wildlife Diversity Program in monitoring and conserving rare and endangered freshwater species, including fishes, mussels, crayfish, and snails. The position involves extensive fieldwork throughout the Pee Dee, Cape Fear, Lumber, and White Oak river basins. Technicians will contribute to ecological surveys using a variety of methods, assist in equipment management, and support data entry and program logistics. Work is primarily outdoors and physically demanding, with occasional travel and overnight field assignments.

Responsibilities
• Conduct aquatic field surveys using snorkeling, seining, backpack and boat electrofishing
• Monitor populations of federal and state-listed aquatic species
• Assist in maintaining and managing field equipment
• Enter and manage biological data collected during surveys
• Support administrative tasks related to fieldwork planning and logistics
• Travel extensively across North Carolina’s central river basins
• Adhere to safety protocols and environmental best practices

Minimum Requirements
• Associate degree and two years of wildlife or fisheries experience, or a bachelor’s degree in a related field
• Valid driver’s license
• Knowledge of aquatic species and habitats
• Ability to identify aquatic organisms
• Capable of using standard field gear and tools
• Able to swim and work safely in aquatic environments

Preferred Qualifications
• Working knowledge of freshwater mussel, crayfish, and fish ecology
• Experience with snorkeling and/or SCUBA diving
• Strong boating and canoeing skills
• Familiarity with aquatic species identification and sampling protocols
• Ability to work independently and maintain field records
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills

Additional Notes

This is a temporary, full-time role lasting up to 8 months. Work conditions include exposure to extreme temperatures, cold water, and physical exertion in rugged field environments. Housing is not provided, but equipment, lodging, and meals are covered during overnight travel. Social Security and applicable taxes will be withheld.
