Job Description

The Conservation Technician I - Wildlife position at the State of Delaware involves assisting in construction and maintenance projects on wildlife areas, operating heavy equipment, and performing various trades. Responsibilities include equipment maintenance, providing public information, and supporting biological data collection. Candidates should have knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance, as well as land management practices. This is a full-time, casual/seasonal role based in Dover, DE.
About the position

The DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife manages approximately 68,000 acres of Delaware land at 19 public wildlife areas that provide hunting opportunities as well as habitat for a variety of species. This position is within the Wildlife/Fisheries Construction Team, which performs major construction and maintenance projects on state wildlife areas, state fisheries ponds and public boat ramps located throughout the state. This position assists staff while operating heavy and specialized construction equipment including dump trucks, tractor trailers, bulldozers, excavators, backhoes, airboats, and weed/algae harvesters in the safest and most cost-effective manner. This position assists with building, repair and maintains dikes, impoundments, ponds, parking lots and roads, and install and repair water structures, floating dock systems and culverts. This position also assists in operating, maintenance and repair of Aquatic algae harvesting equipment throughout the state fisheries areas. This position will also assist staff biologists with biological data collection including at deer checking stations.

Responsibilities
• Applies conservation and preservation principles and practices in support of the management of the state's natural resources.

• Performs maintenance and repairs in a variety of labor/trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting, welding, construction, grounds maintenance.

• Operates marine, land-based and construction equipment and vehicles.

• Maintains and repairs a variety of equipment/vehicles.
,
• Provides information to the public as requested or responds to inquiries regarding agency initiatives/programs.
,
• Ensures the safe usage of state owned, managed, and/or maintained grounds and facilities by the public.
,
• Completes standard forms/applications; maintains records and reports detailing daily activity, tool and equipment inventory, fuel and service logs and related activities.

Requirements
• Knowledge of operating and maintaining equipment such as farming equipment, construction equipment, trucks, boats, or small motor equipment.

• Knowledge of maintenance trades such as grounds keeping, mechanical, building, or general carpentry.
,
• Knowledge of land management activities such as land stewardship, farming practices, invasive species identification and control, herbicide applications, or prescribed burning.

• Knowledge of record keeping.
,
• Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
