Job Description

Pono Pacific Land Management, LLC was founded with a vision of supporting Hawaiʻi’s conservation agencies and private landowners. Since 2000, we have provided specialized services across nearly every ecosystem in the state, including:
• Native habitat restoration and landscape maintenance
• Ungulate- and predator-exclusion fence construction
• Invasive species management
• Predator and ungulate control
• Trail construction and maintenance

We are currently seeking applicants for an On-Call Conservation Field Crew position. This role supports conservation projects on an as-needed basis, with work assignments dependent on project schedules, weather conditions, and operational needs.

As an On-Call Field Crew member, you may be scheduled to assist with ungulate- and predator-exclusion fencing, invasive species management, native planting, trail work, and habitat restoration in potentially extreme outdoor environments. Though based on Oʻahu, inter-island travel is an essential part of this role, and team members can expect periodic statewide travel to support projects. All approved travel expenses—including flights, lodging, ground transportation, and per diem—are covered by the company.

Due to the nature of conservation fieldwork, flexibility in scheduling, travel availability, and adaptability in changing conditions are essential for success in this position. Field Work Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
• Trail construction and maintenance
• Removal of invasive plant and animal species
• Outplanting native species in designated restoration areas
• Construction of ungulate- and predator-proof fencing
• Maintaining company equipment and assets in the field and at the base yard
• Following directions and safety protocols while working independently or in small crews
• Traveling inter-island for field operations and training (transportation and lodging provided)
• Performing other project-specific duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
• Reliable vehicle or dependable transportation
• Ability to follow instructions while working independently or within a team
• Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds over uneven terrain
• Willingness and ability to perform physically demanding work in harsh outdoor conditions for 8–10 hours per day
• Ability to camp in remote areas for multiple consecutive days and/or travel as needed
• Ability to pass a background check and obtain military base access clearance if required
• Access to a device capable of regularly sending and receiving calls, texts, and emails
• Positive attitude and willingness to learn

Preferred Qualifications
• Familiarity with native and invasive species identification
• Experience operating power tools (chainsaws, weed trimmers, etc.)
• State of Hawaiʻi Pesticide Applicator License
• Experience operating heavy equipment (excavator, skid steer, etc.)

Schedule

This is an On-Call position, with work hours varying based on project needs, weather, and operational demands. Assignments may range from single-day projects to multi-week deployments. Periods of active work may be followed by periods without scheduled hours. Flexibility and availability for extended field assignments are required.

Compensation

Compensation is dependent on experience, qualifications, and project assignments - minimum starting rate: $17 per hour. While the work can be physically demanding, it offers a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to Hawaiʻi’s conservation efforts.
