Job Description
The Nantucket Conservation Foundation is hiring a full-time Conservation Farm Lead to manage sustainable farm operations, specifically focusing on cranberry bogs. Responsibilities include developing a sustainable farm plan, overseeing farm operations, maintaining equipment, and leading seasonal assistants. Candidates should have relevant agricultural education or experience, a valid driver's license, and a pesticide applicator's license. The role requires extensive fieldwork in varying weather conditions.
Sustainable Farm Operations
The Nantucket Conservation Foundation is seeking a skilled Cranberry Bog Foreman & Plant Propagation Assistant to manage our sustainable farm operations. This full-time, year-round position will involve developing and implementing a comprehensive sustainable farm plan, ensuring adherence to industry best practices.
Responsibilities
• Develop and implement a sustainable farm plan, considering factors like water usage, soil quality, and ecosystem health.
• Oversee all aspects of cranberry farm operations, including but not limited to irrigation, fertilization, pest management, pruning, ditch maintenance, harvest, and equipment maintenance.
• Maintain and upgrade NCF equipment, pumps, and electrical systems safely and efficiently.
• Coordinate the irrigation system for optimal performance in irrigation, frost protection, and fertilization.
• Conduct tissue and soil tests, analyzing results with NCF's consultants.
• Lead and guide Cranberry Bog Seasonal Assistants in their daily tasks.
• Assist in customer relations, marketing, sales, and distribution of the crop.
• OBTAIN AND MAINTAIN THE REQUIRED LICENSE/CERTIFICATION FOR RESTRICTED MATERIALS.
• Collaborate with the Land Maintenance Manager on various maintenance tasks, such as:
• Field mowing
• Brush cutting
• Lawn care
• Bush trimming
• Trash removal
• Logo post installation
• Fencing installation
• Sign posting
• Tail cutting
• Road repair
• Tree removal
• Wood chipping
• Minor building repairs
• Equipment maintenance
Requirements
This position requires extensive fieldwork and exposure to varying weather conditions and terrain. Candidates must be able to lift heavy loads, stand, bend, kneel, and walk long distances regularly. A valid driver's license and ability to operate tractors and heavy equipment are essential.
Qualifications
• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in agriculture, sustainable farming, horticulture, or equivalent longer-term work experience on farms, preferably cranberry bogs.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications for reporting and record-keeping.
• A valid pesticide applicator's license in the private certification subcategory.
• Prior experience working on cranberry bogs and operating large-scale irrigation equipment is preferred.
