Job Description

Twycross Zoo is hiring a Seasonal Conservation Education Officer to deliver formal education activities and support the Conservation Education Department. Responsibilities include developing workshops, engaging visitors, collaborating with volunteers, and liaising with various departments to enhance conservation efforts. Candidates should have a BSc in a relevant field and experience in conservation education. The role emphasizes education, engagement, and adherence to safeguarding and health and safety protocols.

Key Objectives:

· To deliver all formal education activities.

· Support the Conservation Education Department to implement the zoo’s relevant Strategies, with a focus on education and engagement for positive change.

· To educate visitors and drive engagement in the zoo’s ambition to actively contribute to species survival as part of the 2030 Conservation Strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

· Responsible for delivering formal education. Including the development of innovative and curriculum linked workshops and expeditions, resource management, departmental reporting, teaching and ensuring all zoo procedures and protocols are followed at all times.

· Support with the ongoing monitoring and evaluation to ensure that education activities contribute to TZ’s strategic conservation goals, adapting as necessary.

· Assist with education volunteers and their contribution to the engagement programme, ensuring they are delivering in line with the TZ values.

· Assist with public, community & teacher engagement across all areas of the zoo’s operation and work with the marketing team to develop in-zoo interpretation, website content and public campaigns, ensuring that all information is current and correct.

· Support the Head of Conservation Education in partnerships with higher and further education organisations including universities, to support development and future success of the Global Conservation Centre.

· Maintain up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding and oversee the implementation of TZ’s safeguarding policy and principles across the site.

· Liaise closely with the Sales manager to ensure the school bookings process operates smoothly.

· Liaise closely with the other Life Sciences managers as needed on collaborative research goals.

· Work with the Head of Conservation Education in the implementation, monitoring and adherence to health and safety systems within the department.

· Represent the zoo on relevant external bodies, at conferences and in the media as agreed and appropriate.

· Ensure the department leads by example by adhering to and promoting TZ’s sustainability agenda.

Key Skills and Requirements:

· Educated to BSc level in a conservation / animal-based or education subject.

· A minimum of Level 3 teaching qualification or willingness to complete.

· Experience of developing and delivering conservation education and training in a zoo or university setting is essential.

· Experience in and thorough understanding of planning, developing, and implementing

educational programs in a formal or learning outside the classroom.

· Willingness to keep up-to-date with developments in pedagogy and safeguarding by completing CPD.

· Understanding and interest in wildlife conservation in relation to zoos is a must.

· Ability to work well cross-departmentally, building effective relationships with all departments is a must.

· Excellent computer skills and knowledge and proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.

· Able to work to the highest degree of accuracy and confidentiality, with good organisational and communication skills.

· Ability to obtain a satisfactory DBS check.

· A full driving licence and willingness to drive zoo vehicles as required.

· Flexibility in working times and duties is always a key requirement as the Zoo is a popular leisure attraction run by an enthusiastic team.

· As a team, we are all responsible for delivering an outstanding guest experience so you must be willing to provide operational support to any department as requested.

Schedule:

5/7 days, with some flexibility to cover occasional weekend activities.

Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 2 months

Pay: £13.71 per hour
