Job Description
The Rocky Mountain Youth Corps is hiring Conservation Crew Members for a Fall season in Colorado, from August 19th to October 10th, 2025. Crew members will engage in various conservation projects, including trail maintenance and habitat restoration, while camping outdoors. No prior experience is required. The position offers a stipend of $500/week, with additional benefits for drivers and disaster relief roles. Participants will work closely with a diverse group and complete 10-hour workdays.
Overview: In RMYC’s Conservation Corps, we offer positions to young adults to spend a season serving on meaningful conservation projects throughout northwest Colorado. Projects may include a variety of trail construction/maintenance, fence installation/removal, invasive species management, fuels reduction with chainsaws, campground improvements, habitat restoration, historic preservation work, etc. (No prior experience is required!)
During the Fall Season (August 19th - October 10th, 2025) crews will travel to project sites, complete 10 hours of conservation-based project work per day, and camp together in a variety of outdoor conditions during the project week (5-9 days at a time), then will return to the office in Steamboat Springs, CO, and be ‘OFF’ for 2-5 days at a time. During your project days (or 'hitch'), RMYC covers your crew's food budget and transportation, but with 'OFF’ time in the Fall, you are responsible for your food, transportation, and lodging. All corps members and leaders will participate in service projects, daily camp chores, and educational activities.
RMYC's 2024 Fall Season will include general conservation crews, 2 full time chainsaw crews, and a disaster relief crew! Crew type will be discussed further in the interview process.
Must adhere to and enforce the rules and regulations of RMYC and AmeriCorps, which include abstaining from the use of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco while on hitch (fall); as well as other rules, regulations, and risk management protocol.
Crew Types:
• Conservation Crew
• Conservation/Disaster Relief Crew
• Chainsaw Crew
Stipend: $500/ week (pre-tax, paid biweekly)
• Crew members willing to serve as drivers of the crew vehicle are eligible for an additional $50 on their weekly stipend. This additional responsibility is contingent upon RMYC program staff assignment
• Additional $375/week Disaster Deployment stipend available for Disaster Relief Crew during deployment dates.
Gear: $300 gear reimbursement, processed in full by the 2nd paycheck with submission of all receipts. Reimbursement is a one-time benefit and must be completed in a single submission. Members also have access to a loaner gear program, and exclusive pro deals to help acquire necessary gear.
Session Dates: Fall Crew Member- August 19th- October 10th, 2025 (Tentative end, weather/project dependent)*
• Season extension optional for disaster relief at end of the Fall season
AmeriCorps Award: Fall Season Only- 300 Hour Segal Education Award ($1,565.08)
Essential Position Functions:
• Live, and serve closely with a diverse group of people for the complete duration of Americorps term/position (8 weeks for fall Crew Member)
• Complete 10 hours of project tasks a day for 4-8 days while camping in a variety of outdoor conditions, including inclement weather, for the duration of the season. (No prior experience is required)
• Members are entitled to a ½ hour lunch break per day that is unpaid and does not count towards education hours.
• Participation in all RMYC service, education and group camping activities or duties:
• Swinging tools, hiking, carrying heavy weights and other intense physical labor
• Cleaning the crew van, group cooking, collecting and filtering water and other group chores
• Debriefing service projects, risk management discussions, feedback sessions and educational activities.
• Any other activities or duties deemed necessary by your Crew Leader or an RMYC staff member.
• Must adhere to and enforce the rules and regulations of RMYC and AmeriCorps, which includes abstaining from the use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco while while on hitch (fall); as well as other rules, regulations and risk management protocols.
• May not participate in any AmeriCorps Prohibited Activities as outlined in the Member Service Agreement (MSA).
