Caroline County Public Schools is seeking a part-time Composting Support Specialist to aid cafeteria staff in implementing a composting program. Responsibilities include setting up composting bins, educating students and staff on composting practices, monitoring composting stations, and tracking waste diversion efforts. Candidates should have a passion for sustainability and strong communication skills. The role requires physical ability to handle composting materials and is available when schools are in session.
Job Summary:

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Composting Support Specialist to assist cafeteria staff in implementing and maintaining a composting program in our public school system’s cafeterias. This part-time role will involve working closely with cafeteria teams to ensure proper composting practices, monitor waste diversion efforts, and assist in the education of students and staff on the benefits of composting. The successful candidate will help create a sustainable, environmentally-friendly initiative that reduces food waste and promotes a greener school community.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Familiarity with composting and waste reduction practices.
• Ability to manage and track data related to waste diversion and sustainability.
• Experience working in a school or public service setting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Assist Cafeteria Staff with Composting Setup: Collaborate with cafeteria staff to set up composting bins and ensure they are properly labeled and easily accessible for students and staff.
• Composting Education & Outreach: Assisting in the education of students, teachers, and cafeteria workers on what can and cannot be composted, encouraging participation and fostering awareness of the program.
• Monitor Composting Stations: Regularly check composting stations during designated hours to ensure they are being used correctly and efficiently, providing guidance as needed.
• Track Waste Diversion Progress: Help monitor and report the amount of waste being composted and suggest improvements for increasing composting rates. Help maintain records of composting activities and participate in reporting waste diversion efforts to school administrators or district sustainability teams.
• Provide Support & Troubleshooting: Assist cafeteria staff with any composting-related challenges and suggest solutions for maintaining cleanliness and organization at composting stations.
• Promote Sustainability Initiatives: Help raise awareness of the school district’s sustainability goals and assist in other related initiatives like recycling programs.

Qualifications:
• Experience: Previous experience in food service, sustainability, or environmental education is preferred but not required. A passion for sustainability and environmental issues is essential.
• Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage with students, staff, and the school community. Ability to work independently and take initiative.
• Physical Requirements: Ability to move, lift, and carry composting bins or bags (up to 30 lbs).
• Availability: Must be available to work part-time, four hours a day, when schools are in session (specific schedule to be determined).
• Other: Ability to maintain a positive attitude and contribute to a collaborative, team-oriented environment.

PAY & HOURS: This position is a part-time position with a 4 hours per day, when schools are in session.
