Job Description

The Wilderness Society is seeking a Community Organiser in Launceston, Tasmania, to build a movement for nature protection. The role involves inspiring volunteers, fostering community connections, and developing campaign strategies. Candidates should have a passion for nature advocacy, experience in community organising, and strong communication skills. The position offers flexibility in working hours and location, including options for remote work, along with generous leave and professional development opportunities.
COMMUNITY ORGANISER

The Wilderness Society is working for a future that does not rely on continued destruction of nature and our climate, but rather flourishes because of our responsible stewardship of these core life support systems. We value organisational independence and integrity.

Be part of a team that’s secured some of the biggest wins for Australian wilderness and nature: stopping the damming of the Franklin River nearly fifty years ago, keeping big oil out of the Great Australian Bight, or defending special forests the length and breadth of this continent.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Protecting nature requires a powerful, diverse movement of people who are ready to take action. As the Launceston Community Organiser, you'll be part of building that movement in Tasmania. You'll work to inspire and empower volunteers, creating opportunities for them to get involved in our campaigns and become leaders in their own right. By building strong community connections and strategic alliances, you'll help us mobilise support for our vital work, ensuring that our campaigns have a real impact on protecting Tasmania's iconic wilderness and contributing to the broader goals of the Wilderness Society.

ABOUT YOU
• Passionate Advocate: You possess a deep commitment to protecting nature and wilderness, and are driven to build a powerful movement for change.
• Community Builder: You are great at connecting with all people, fostering inclusive environments, and inspiring collective action.
• Organising Experience: Ideally, you bring a minimum of 2 years of experience in community organising, volunteer management, or related fields, demonstrating your ability to mobilise and empower groups.
• Strategic Thinker: You can contribute to the development and execution of campaign strategies, identifying opportunities to engage communities and achieve tangible outcomes.
• Collaborative Spirit: You thrive in team environments, readily collaborate with colleagues across departments, and value building strong alliances with individuals and organisations.
• Leadership Development: You're keen to support and mentor community leaders, building their capacity to drive campaign success.
• Effective Communicator: You possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, enabling you to clearly articulate campaign messages and build rapport with diverse audiences.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS
• Five weeks of annual leave per year
• Genuine flexibility in working hours and location, with support for office and/or remote working
• 15 days personal leave
• 3 additional leave days at end of year
• Floating public holidays
• Generous Paid parental leave (subject to eligibility conditions)
• Commitment to supporting your professional development
• Access to Long Service Leave after five years of continuous service
• Access to our Employee Assistance Program (free counselling service)
• Regular 1:1 meetings for coaching and management support
• Performance conversations for reflections and growth
• When you start, a co-developed initial 3 month work plan

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY (EEO) STATEMENT

Our approach to diversity is about embracing everyone. From building a culture where you can bring your best self to work, to deploying initiatives that support the different needs of our staff, we are proud to be part of building an inclusive world for all. If you identify as a First Nations person, a woman, LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, a person with a disability, a person of colour, or if you are from a culturally and linguistically diverse background, we strongly encourage you to apply.

All qualified applicants will be considered regardless of race, colour, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, age, or veteran status.
