Job Description

York County South Carolina is hiring a temporary Collection/Recycling Center Attendant. The role involves working at various Collection & Recycling Centers, guiding citizens, monitoring waste volumes, and maintaining site safety and cleanliness. Responsibilities include customer service, traffic direction, record keeping, and equipment maintenance. The work schedule includes Monday to Saturday shifts. This position may transition into a permanent part-time role.

Our department supports 16 Collection & Recycling Centers throughout the county by providing solid waste and recycling opportunities for York County residents, aiming to meet waste reduction and recycling goals set by the SC Solid Waste Management Policy Act.

We established the recycling program in 1993 and are recognized as one of the best in South Carolina.

Join Our Team

We invite you to apply for a temporary position as a Collection & Recycling Center Attendant in our Solid Waste Collection and Recycling division.

This role will involve working at Collection & Recycling Center sites throughout York County as needed, with the possibility of transitioning into a permanent part-time position at a regular site.

Your responsibilities will include guiding citizens delivering waste and recyclable materials to County Collection & Recycling Centers, monitoring container volumes, maintaining site appearance and safety, and keeping accurate records.
Work Schedule


You will work Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and/or Saturday, from 7:00 am – 1:00 pm or 1:00 pm – 7:00 pm.
Essential Functions

The following tasks represent the majority of your work time:
• Closing and opening the centers, and assisting the general public.
• Providing professional customer service to citizens, answering questions related to proper disposal and recycling, notifying citizens of upcoming events or policy changes, and encouraging participation in recycling.
• Monitoring and screening waste and recyclable materials delivered by residents, ensuring materials are placed in appropriate containers.
• Directing traffic at the centers as needed.
• Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records and logs of daily activities.
• E nsuring the center and surrounding areas are clean and orderly, removing trash and debris, and cleaning buildings as necessary.
• Monitoring two-way radios, providing assistance to callers, and answering telephone calls as needed.
• Assisting with unloading recycle and household waste containers as requested.
• Inspecting, cleaning, and maintaining assigned equipment and tools, and notifying supervisor of necessary maintenance and repair needs.
• Assisting with other division and department functions as assigned.
• Operating compactors, rakes, hoes, garden forks, hose pipes, hand sprayers, cleaning supplies, and additional hand tools.
• Performing all duties in accordance with County policies and procedures, standards of quality and safety, and all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
Requirements


To be eligible for this position, you must:
• Hold a High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
• Meet physical demands, which include walking or standing virtually all the time, exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular basis, and using fingers, hands, or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.

The job involves exposure to:
• Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
• Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
• Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
• Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
• Traffic; Moving machinery.
• Electrical shock; Heights.
• Radiation; Disease/pathogens.
