Heal the Bay stands out as the most recognized environmental nonprofit group in LA for a reason: since 1985, we have been dedicated to maintaining the safety, health, and cleanliness of Southern California’s coastal waters and watersheds, both for people and marine life. Through the combined efforts of education, science, advocacy, and community action, we strive to raise awareness and implement practical solutions to address complex water quality issues.

Every year, we organize hundreds of beach and community cleanups, actively engaging individuals and informing them about the root causes of pollution along shorelines and in their neighborhoods. Additionally, we offer easily accessible water quality data for over 700 beaches along the West Coast, as well as local freshwater recreation sites.

Advocating for stringent water quality regulations is a crucial part of our mission, aimed at safeguarding the health of both humans and the diverse array of animals that inhabit local creeks, rivers, and the Santa Monica Bay. We proudly operate the award-winning Heal the Bay Aquarium at the Santa Monica Pier, inspiring visitors to become stewards of our most vital natural resource: clean water.

About the Role

Heal the Bay is the Los Angeles County Coordinator for California Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD). CCD is part of the International Coastal Cleanup effort organized by the Ocean Conservancy. Heal the Bay hosts 50-70 individual cleanup sites across the region. Each Site is a unique expression of the surrounding community. Coastal Cleanup Day occurs this year on Saturday, September 20, 2025. The Coastal Cleanup Day Coordinator works closely with the Outreach, Communications, Advancement, and Aquarium teams to coordinate the event.

Heal the Bay is looking for a well-organized, charismatic, and responsible individual capable of working in a fast-paced environment to recruit volunteer Site Captains, track and coordinate cleanup sites, and coordinate event logistics. The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently but also enjoys working as part of a team. Reporting to the Beach Programs Manager, the Coastal Cleanup Day Coordinator will help by creating and developing tools to ensure an inclusive event for all Angelenos.

This role is expected to begin on May 12, 2025, and run through October 10, 2025.

Responsibilities:

Work with Beach Programs Manager to:
• Coordinate all logistics of Heal the Bay’s Coastal Cleanup Day 50+ cleanup sites, including pulling cleanup permits
• Train and support volunteer site captains and staff before Coastal Cleanup Day to ensure that the individual sites have all the tools they need to run safely and smoothly.
• Schedule and facilitate volunteer training for site captains.
• Manage the Coastal Cleanup Day volunteer and contact database in Salesforce.
• Help create brochures, flyers, and other print materials in Canva (based on your knowledge), including the Coastal Cleanup Day Wrap-Up book.
• Handle logistical concerns by phone, virtual meeting, direct message, and email to internal staff, volunteers, and event partners.
• Attendance at some weekend and evening events is mandatory. September 20, 2025, especially.
• Support cleanup activities as necessary throughout the summer to learn Heal the Bay’s cleanup flow and expectations.
• Present captain and volunteer recruitment opportunities such as Speakers Bureau talks for corporate groups, civic clubs, schools, etc.
• Make virtual and in-person presentations to community leaders and groups to promote participation in CCD.
• Attend weekly staff meetings, namely every other Wednesday evening and Wednesday and Friday Mornings. Virtual options are available for some meetings.

Qualifications:
• High cultural competency and DEI training experience preferred
• Well organized, careful attention to detail, and ability to meet strict deadlines
• Comfortable communicating effectively with small groups, large groups of volunteers, community groups, members of the press, and government offices, both in person and virtually
• Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team
• Passion for the environment
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly in Excel and Word

The ideal candidate will have experience and/or strong interest in:
• Bilingual in English and Spanish and/or Korean, but not required
• Experience using Salesforce or similar CRM software
• Experience or interest in public speaking and leading training workshops
• Experience creating content for website pages, forms, videos, graphics, flyers, gifs, and social media posts across platforms (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, MyEmma, Salesforce, Google Analytics, etc.)
• Experience creating culturally relevant social media or digital campaign materials for members of the Los Angeles County community
• Interest in assisting with data tracking for volunteers and marine debris

Wages & Schedule:
• This position is non-exempt, seasonal, and pays $25/hour. Compensation does not include benefits but does include accrued sick time.
• This part-time position (20 hours a week on average, increasing as the event approaches) is an excellent opportunity to gain experience and exposure in community outreach and environmental project management.
• The span of employment is May 12 - October 10, 2025. Some nights and weekends required.
