Clemson University is hiring a Climate-Smart Lab Technician in Blackville, SC, to support a USDA-funded project on soil carbon and greenhouse gas monitoring in beef cattle systems. Responsibilities include analyzing soil and forage samples, assisting graduate students, maintaining lab facilities, and supporting data collection and educational activities. JOB SUMMARY:

In support of the USDA-funded project 'Building Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities in South Carolina', Dr. Liliane Silva is seeking highly motivated candidates for a laboratory technician on a multi-disciplinary team that will monitor soil carbon stocks and greenhouse gas fluxes in the beef cattle system in South Carolina. The position is based at the Edisto Research and Education Center in Blackville, SC. Other duties as assigned

JOB DUTIES:

50% - Essential: Assist with soil and forage samples analysis to determine carbon/nitrogen concentrations. Activities will include but are not limited to weighing and grinding samples and sample preparation for analysis, data entry, elaboration of reports and collecting additional forages and soil samples and data as required.

30% - Essential: Support and assist graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in laboratory analyses and sample preparation. Provide training as to students and interns as needed to support use of laboratory facilities, equipment and carry over laboratory analysis.

10% - Essential: Facility maintenance: repairs, cleans and provide maintenance and organization to the facilities and storage of samples. Communicates storage and product needs. Additional duties may be assigned.

10% - Essential: Support for data collection and educational activities: supports and collects data as directed by project leader (s). Assist with organization of workshops and educational activities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: 1st Bachelor's Degree - related field and work experience directly related to the assigned research area; or a high school diploma and advanced journey-level work experience in a clinical or research setting.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Master's Degree or Doctoral / Professional Degree - Agronomy, Plant Sciences, Soil Science, Ecology, Animal Sciences or related disciplines

Licenses: Drivers License Class D normal < 26,000

Work Experience: 2+ years - Relevant experience with instruments and techniques. Experience with farm, livestock and/or forage management.

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and able to learn, adopt and implement techniques as needed; plan, manage, lead, and communicate tasks/results across groups; collect, analyze and interpret data; and meet the deadlines as required by the project. Prior experience is desired but not required, and training will be provided.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Standard Hours: 37.5

Compensation Information

Anticipated Salary Range: $39,000.00 - $55,000.00

Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.

Essential Personnel Level

Normal Operations

Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
