The Nj Department Of Environmental Protection is seeking a Climate Resilience Outreach & Program Support Intern for a summer internship from June 1 to August 21, 2026, in Trenton, NJ. The intern will assist in drafting outreach materials, preparing research briefs, and supporting community engagement efforts related to climate resilience. Candidates should be in their senior year or graduate programs in relevant fields and possess skills in clear communication and community outreach.

Internship Hours Per Week: up to 35 hours per week (5 days per week)

Hourly Rate: Sliding Scale based on Education Level ($19-$24 Per Hour)

Program: Office of Climate Resilience

Program Description: The Office of Climate Resilience (OCR) oversees, coordinates, and implements major state initiatives and programs related to building New Jersey’s resilience to the impacts of climate change. In his role of Chief Climate Resilience Officer, Nick Angarone works to coordinate statewide resilience policy, leads and directs the development of the Statewide Climate Change Resilience Strategy, and provides technical guidance and support to local governments in their efforts to plan for and address the current and anticipated impacts of climate change. Through Executive Order No. 89, the Interagency Council on Climate Resilience (IAC or Interagency Council) was established to develop short- and long-term action plans that will promote the mitigation, adaptation, and resilience of New Jersey’s economy, communities, infrastructure, and natural resources. The Chief Resilience Officer serves as Vice-Chair of the Interagency Council and the Office of Climate Resilience provides staff support.

Project Description: The Interagency Council (IAC) forms workgroups to address specific climate resilience topics, such as outreach strategy, extreme heat communications, and vulnerability assessments. The intern will support these workgroups by drafting and revising outreach materials (e.g., social media, newsletters, website content, and extreme heat preparedness resources), preparing research briefs, and creating discussion materials (e.g., memos, literature reviews, and meeting slides). The intern will also assist OCR staff with improving climate resilience communications, including staffing community events and tracking outreach progress.

Specific to the Position: Candidates with skills in translating complex topics into clear language, interest in climate action or resilience planning, and experience in community engagement are preferred.

Preferred Area of Study: Seeking individuals enrolled in an accredited university/college who are in their senior year or graduate level program studying Climate Resilience, Climate Action, Urban and Regional Planning, Environmental Studies, Public Administration, Sustainability, Political Science, Communications, Marketing or other related fields.

License: Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
