Job Description The Climate Desk at the New York Times is looking for an experienced, deeply-sourced and elegant writer to join the team of reporters covering climate and environmental policy and politics. You will focus on how Americans, their communities, and the federal government, adapt to climate change. You will cover disaster response and the myriad ways that people are adapting to climate change affecting their homes, livelihoods, and communities. Everywhere we turn, there are compelling, undercovered stories of adaptation. You can help readers understand the economic impact of climate change on housing, agriculture and other segments of society, and what it means for consumers, industries and the nation’s financial health. You have experience reporting that has produced scoops and has helped to shape the national conversation. This is a hybrid position based in Washington, DC, and includes regular attendance in the office each week per departmental guidance. Responsibilities: Break news on climate and environmental policy, focusing on adaptation in local, state and federal levels. Conceptualize and deliver compelling enterprise stories. Contribute to live coverage on breaking news stories. Help readers understand the impact of climate change and the political forces at play in addressing it. Collaborate with other reporters on news and enterprise, as well as visual stories. Deliver fast, clean copy in accessible style on complicated topics. Ensure accuracy and clarity. Meet tight deadlines and be able to excel in a daily, unpredictable news environment. Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world. You will report to Deputy Editor, Climate Desk Basic Qualifications: 5+ years of experience working for a daily news organization 3+ years of demonstrated beat authority on climate Writing skills that also reflect a mastery of journalistic style and standards Demonstrated superlative, authoritative writing on the biggest development in climate news A portfolio that shows you are well-versed in current policy, and have a growing circle of expert sources among climate-focused researchers, policymakers, analysts, emergency response experts, public interest groups and lawmakers A portfolio that includes news, enterprise and analysis Preferred Qualifications: Facility with visual, service and a wide variety forms storytelling forms Demonstrated experience working with data as part of reporting Demonstrated experience in investigative journalism This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY. The annual base pay salary for this role is between $122,529.36 and $165,000.00.
