Job Description

The Somerset Wildlife Trust is seeking a Climate Adaptation Assistant to support the creation of climate adaptation plans for communities in Somerset. This volunteer role involves administrative tasks, data management, and communication support. The position requires in-person attendance at the office, although hybrid options may be available after a few months. A commitment of 3 hours per week is expected, focusing on community engagement and environmental issues.
We are currently recruiting for a volunteer to support us with the creation of climate adaptation plans for communities across Somerset. Working alongside the Climate Adaptation team, the assistant will provide vital administrative and communications support to help communities understand and implement effective climate adaption measures.

To get the most out of the role we would like someone who can come into the office and volunteer with the team in-person. Hybrid volunteering could be an option after the first few months.

As a volunteer, you will give as much or as little time as you are able. To get the most out of this role, we ask that your usual commitment would be 3 hours per week.

Tasks involved in this role include:
• Data entry and management of climate adaptation resources and contacts
• Proofreading documents, reports, and community plans
• Creating simple maps using digital tools to support community planning
• Drafting content for social media posts related to climate adaptation initiatives
• Writing newsletter articles to highlight community success stories
• Assisting with filing and organization of project materials
• Supporting the preparation of materials for community workshops and meetings
• Creation of case studies and uploading to the appropriate networks

Optional: Helping at community events (as desired by the volunteer)

Skills and abilities needed

We're not looking for an expert, just someone with the right aptitude and skills to learn and make the most of this opportunity!

Essential:
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Good attention to detail for data entry and proofreading tasks
• Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office, email, internet)
• Reliable and able to commit to regular hours
• Interest in environmental issues and community engagement

Desirable:
• Experience with social media platforms
• Previous administrative or communications experience
• Understanding of climate change and adaptation concepts

Practical requirements:
• Access to own laptop for tasks
• Access to own transport due to the location of the office
