Job Description

The City Government Zero Waste Coordinator for San Francisco will develop and enforce zero waste policies for city buildings, assist with the transition to a new refuse hauler, and improve existing waste processes. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with waste policies, managing contracts, coordinating with city departments, and overseeing programs at over 1,000 facilities. This full-time position requires collaboration with various city agencies and may involve supervising one direct report.
As the City Government Zero Waste Coordinator, you will focus on the government zero waste sector, specifically refuse generated by City and County of San Francisco buildings and offices. You will be responsible for assisting with the development, implementation, evaluation, and enforcement of the City’s zero waste policies and programs in the city government sector. The City and County of San Francisco has issued an intent to award contract with a new refuse hauler, which is a significant change. Given this new change, you’ll work with colleagues at a wide range of city departments to help them to transition to the new refuse collection service provider. You will also implement and improve their existing on-site zero waste processes and programs. In addition, as the City Government Zero Waste Coordinator, you will provide analysis and assistance to government and service provider partners on issues that may affect our path to zero waste such as policy development and advocacy, on-site inspections, behavior change methods and waste generation reduction strategies. You will have day-to-day decision-making responsibilities for projects as well as the ability to negotiate within project scopes.

Serving in a Coordinator-level position (Class 5640), you will work under the supervision of a Class 5642 Senior Environmental Specialist (the City Government Zero Waste Senior Coordinator) who is responsible for defining project scopes and deliverables.

Job Duties
• Ensure compliance by city agencies with related state and local policies at are applicable to refuse service collection and zero waste.
• Manage, develop, and/or support contracts, grants and other tasks related to solid waste or other zero waste program areas as needed.
• Coordinate with the Office of Contract Administration (OCA) on the administration of the City’s refuse collection service agreement to ensure that zero waste related requirements are met.
• Manage City Government zero waste programs to more than 1,000 facilities and parks in the city government sector of San Francisco.
• Oversee improvement of zero waste programs at city-owned department locations including identifying and training liaisons who will serve as Departmental Zero Waste Coordinators and develop updated departmental zero waste action plans.
• Develop and manage databases for tracking ordinance compliance and outreach activities.
• May supervise one direct report.
