Job Description

The University of Rhode Island is seeking a Campus Sustainability Officer to lead a comprehensive sustainability program. Responsibilities include overseeing resource management, advising leadership, developing sustainability metrics, and promoting sustainable practices across the campus. The role requires a Master's degree and five years of relevant experience. This is a full-time, permanent position with a salary range of $80,000 - $85,000, based in Rhode Island.
About the position

The Campus Sustainability Officer will organize and oversee the implementation and management of a comprehensive university program to promote a culture of sustainability and stewardship of resources. This includes utilities, energy and waste management, consumption, recycling, and facilities planning and construction. The officer will work directly with the university community to assist in implementing sustainable practices in both curricular and co-curricular activities. They will serve as a spokesperson on sustainability issues and collaborate with the President's Executive Council to develop and implement campus sustainability strategies. This role involves developing metrics, gathering data, building dashboards, monitoring progress, and reporting on sustainability performance and objectives related to the campus strategic plan and climate action plan. The officer will also lead and serve on university committees to promote sustainable practices across all campuses and assist in achieving carbon neutrality goals.

Responsibilities
• Interface with various university offices to ensure best practices in renewable energy and sustainability.

• Advise campus leadership on monitoring performance toward sustainability goals.

• Develop financial plans for sustainability programs.

• Identify grant funding opportunities and prepare proposal applications.

• Supervise and mentor student employees and interns.

• Maintain and update content for the Sustainability Office website.

• Research best practices in sustainability from peer institutions.

• Promote sustainable practices across the university through collaboration.

• Build and maintain professional relationships with stakeholders.

• Serve as an educational resource for sustainability principles.

• Enhance public image of URI's sustainability practices.

• Make presentations to promote stewardship and sustainable goals.

• Implement internal sustainability training and programming.

• Monitor emerging trends and foster a culture of sustainability.

Requirements
• Master's degree.
,
• Minimum of five years of work experience related to sustainability.

• Demonstrated knowledge of all dimensions of sustainability.

• Demonstrated analytical and planning skills.
,
• Demonstrated leadership experience in environmental initiatives.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

• Ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

• Working knowledge of LEED certification standards.

• Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

• Proficiency in written communication skills.

• Supervisory experience.
,
• Experience in Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.

• Ability to develop promotional materials.

• Website management experience.
