About the position
The Conservation Staff Specialist Trainee 2 position is a permanent, full-time role within the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, specifically in the State Parks division located in Yerington. This position is designed for individuals who are in the process of developing their skills in natural resource management, preservation, conservation, and protection. Under close supervision, the incumbent will receive training to assist in the development, formulation, and coordination of various programs, policies, and procedures related to resource management, safety, training, fire management, and policy management pertinent to the assigned area of natural resource management. As a trainee, the incumbent will engage in a variety of tasks including participating in weed and noxious vegetation inventory and removal, leading conservation plans, and conducting various vegetation projects. This includes activities such as spraying, mechanical removal, and handwork to combat invasive species, as well as conducting field surveys, park beautification, and irrigation projects. The role also involves seeking and administering conservation-related grants, managing inventory of chemicals and tools, and utilizing GIS and other software to track weed inventory. The incumbent will work closely with contractors and other agencies, assist in propagating new plant materials, and help manage ranch leases and water rights. The position also emphasizes public outreach and education, requiring the incumbent to assist with special events and community engagement. Responsibilities
• Assist in developing, formulating, and coordinating programs related to resource management, safety, and training.

• Participate in weed and noxious vegetation inventory and removal.

• Function as lead on conservation plans, including spraying and mechanical removal of invasive species.

• Conduct various vegetation projects, park beautification, and irrigation projects.

• Perform field surveys, weed inventory, and trail enhancements.

• Seek and help administer conservation-related grants and funding opportunities.

• Use GIS and software to track weed inventory and organize information with other agencies.

• Function as a liaison with contractors or businesses on conservation projects.

• Propagate new plant materials and maintain the park greenhouse.

• Assist the Park Supervisor with ranch lease management and protection of riparian areas.

• Engage in public outreach, education, and special events.
Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, environmental studies, environmental science, fire management, forestry, natural resource management, parks management, or related field and one year of professional experience in a relevant resource management field; OR high school graduation and three years of relevant experience; OR one year of experience as a Conservation Crew Supervisor II, Conservation Staff Specialist Trainee I, Firefighter II, Fish Hatchery Technician III, or Wildlife Area Technician III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Current certification as a Professional in Rangeland Management (CPRM), Certified Forester, or Associate Wildlife Biologist (AWB) is equivalent to one year of professional experience.

• Successful completion of the Research Associate Program through the Great Basin Institute qualifies applicants at the Conservation Staff Specialist Trainee II level.

• One year of experience in the AmeriCorps Program qualifies applicants at the Conservation Staff Specialist Trainee I level.

• A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
