Job Description
Claystone Waste Ltd. is seeking a Compost Equipment Operator in Ryley, AB, responsible for safely operating heavy construction equipment at the compost facility. Key duties include managing compost operations, monitoring moisture levels, maintaining cleanliness, and adhering to health and safety protocols. The role requires skills in equipment operation and maintenance, initiative, and the ability to follow instructions. A valid Alberta driver's license is necessary, and a Compost Operator Certificate must be obtained within 12 months.
The Compost Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective operation of a variety of heavy construction equipment used at the Claystone Waste Ltd. (CWL) compost facility.
The Compost Equipment Operator will follow the established CWL policies and procedures in the execution of her/his duties, including adherence to the CWL Occupational and Health Safety & Environment (HSE) Program. Responsibilities will include:
• Performing routine assignments in the safe operation of heavy equipment used in compost operations;
• Successfully operate various heavy-duty equipment with considerable care and attention (i.e. front end loader, screener, mixer, skid steer);
• Responsible to build aerated compost rows and follow the procedures necessary to turn the received organics in Category A and B finished compost;
• Responsible to screen primary compost to separate over’s and wood chips from the primary compost material;
• Monitor row moisture and apply water to each row as required;
• Monitor stormwater and leachate pond levels. Remove volume as required;
• Maintain a clean facility free from loose litter and debris;
• Performing work assignments received from superiors, normally without close supervision. Work will be reviewed and evaluated in terms of the care exercised in operating and maintaining equipment, as well as promptness, completeness and quality with which the assigned work is performed;
• Prepare and present pre- and post-trip documentation, as well as safety reports (near miss and incident reports) as required;
• Willingness to obtain an Alberta Compost Operator Certificate within 12 months of hire
• Supporting other landfill and trucking staff and mentoring less experienced staff assigned to related work duties. This includes assistance as required during the absence of other staff due to illness, vacation or other leave;
• Other operations duties as may be reasonably assigned by the Director of Facilities, Landfill Supervisor, or designate.
The Compost Equipment Operator will be expected to comply with all CWL plans, policies and procedures, including codes of ethics and behavior, and health, safety and environment programs, and present a professional and respectful image on behalf of CWL. This position will adhere to organizational Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) compliance and the CWL HSE program policies and procedures in the course of completing projects and assignments.
The Compost Equipment Operator will possess:
• Considerable skills in the safe operation and use of heavy construction and equipment typically used for compost/landfills and other civil works;
• Exhibit initiative and responsibility as well as an understanding of the capabilities of the equipment being operated;
• Knowledge, skill and ability to operate equipment safely and be able to avoid accidents;
• Knowledge, skill and ability in the maintenance and servicing of the equipment at the work site, or when the equipment is in the shop for repair, servicing and/or maintenance;
• Ability to carry out written or oral instructions;
• Exhibit a high level of initiative, work performance and responsibility in the operation of equipment and the performance of duties;
• Formal trade school training in the operation of heavy construction equipment is desirable;
• Valid class 5 Alberta driver’s license.
employee must be available monday to saturday.
This is a 40 hour per week position with occasional overtime.
